ANY GOOD BUCKS IN THIS UNIT? IS IT OVERCROWDED WITH HUNTERS?
ANY INFO. WOULD BE GREAT.

When I was a kid in the 60's and 70's we took some real nice bucks out of that unit. the genetics are still there and deer numbers are down but not as bad as most units in Oregon. some nice bucks can be found on the private land and one now and then on public. expect an oh my god amount of hunters, that's why we don't hunt there anymore.

Lived in Hermiston just north of the Heppner unit for several years. LOTS of hunters, but there are some road closures. I used to ride my mountain bike as far as I could and would start to see elk and deer about 2 miles in. Lots of road hunters slaying every spike and forked horn buck in the woods. It can get pretty crazy. There are areas to get away from hunters, look at your map for areas without roads or road closures.

Good luck,

Rich

Kind of off subject but I was just talking to Craig Ely who is the northeast regional manager for ODFW and they are going to remove half of the cougar population in the heppner unit starting next month. They will start trapping them and then turn to hounds this fall, so that should help your hunting some.

it's my understanding there gonna do it in all the units, a friend of mine is applying for one of the state trapper jobs...it's well over due in my opinion...

YOU'VE PROBABLY HEARD THIS BEFORE BUT WHY NOT LET HUNTERS/TRAPPERS KILL THE CATS?
MAKE HUNTERS HAPPY AS WELL AS MONEY FOR THE ODFW.
MAKES SENSE TO ME.

I hope you guys are right, if we're going to save hunting in Oregon it's the only way. if it's true how did they get our piece of crap governor on board with it? he's shot down every try so far.

we should be happy at least he's allowing gov, trappers to do it, I guess he feels it's more humane..?...'eh
