Utah Bonus Points

For all the people with the vast knowledge on Utah on this site, I figured I'd see if I could tap into that pipeline. My brother, best friend, and I want to hunt utah. We have 4 bonus points. We'd like to go in 2008 or 2009, which would give us 5-6 pts when we apply. Any recommendations on a good unit we could draw by then. We are all archery hunters, but hunt with a rifle when a rifle tag is drawn. Thanks for any and all advice, and I'd be willing to trade some info on MT or OR in exchange. Thanks.

Hard thing about Utah is it's not a pref point system, just a bonus point system. Unless you have max points, you really can't count on much like you can on other states. Makes for horrible planning. With Archery your odds will go up, but still, it's a lottery and all you get is few more lotto tickets with your points. Bonus points don't really increase your odds much on the hard units (unless max). I agree you might look elsewhere if you want to count on hunting for sure and take your chances in Utah and hope you draw either year. Just don't rely on Utah to come through since some dude with 0 points could take that coveted tag!

Don't do the point code only any year... what you have to do is apply every year. The year (s) you do point code only, you could have drawn.... with a bonus point system you 'could' draw any year you apply... it never fails, some one in the lower tier-mid tier point pool draws the tag! in 1 tag offering units....

Where as with a Pref. point system, if you aint head of the point pool for the unit your appling in.. your wasting your time on Pref point systems....

Archery may increase your 'odds' a pinch but alot of guys are 'bandwagoning' onto the archery odds curve and it isn't really that much better.

Keep in mind the 'schedule hunt year' aint going to happen when your looking at drawing a tag... it doesn't matter which point sytem you are locked into... the fish and game departments change stuff yearly it seems and screws a guys decent plan up!! ha

Keep the faith........

You should definitely go with archery it will help your guys odds out out very much. And as mentioned above put in for draw (just dont buy a point) all years. As far as good archery deer units, that you may have a chance is the Book cliff unit in the Eastern part of the state and the paunsagunt unit in the south. Stay away from the paunsagunt rifle hunt, it can be tough as the deer are in transition, with archery your odds will be better anyhow. Good Luck fellas!!
