LAST EDITED ON Jul-07-06 AT 11:39AM (MST)[p]Anybody have any thoughts on area 82 for mule deer? I want to bowhunt early, and don't know the area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Jul-07-06 AT 01:50PM (MST)[p]Prepared to see thousands upon thousands of people and not many deer. There once was a day when this area was about as good as any out there, and it has always been a general tag for a resident, but those days are long behind us. I personally hunted that area for many years taking some good deer but you couldn't pay me enough money to go back there again. It doesn't matter if you are early, late, or somewhere in the middle that place will be swarming with every guy and his dog trying to chase mule deer. One thing you have going for you is 98% of them won't get out of there vehicle and off the roads.

Someday Wyoming will grow a brain and close that area off as a general over the counter tag and make it a limited quota area, once they do you are going to see some monster muleys taken from that area. I can't wait for the day so that I can once again go back home and chase some area 82 deer.

iashedhead, I don't mean to sound sarcastic but unfortunately for a guy that grew up hunting area 82 and having some darn good luck I can't help but think of that area and remember what it use to be.

If you would like I could point you in general direction of a few promising places to check out.

Yes that area is not what it used to be that is for sure however, get of the road/trails and hump in and you'll find that the area still holds better than average mulies. If you go early in bow season your chances increase from my experience. Rifle season is a whole different story. Another word of advise would be to understand with the holiday weekend there will be tons of campers. You'll be fine if you get off the beaten path.

Bigmuley,

Well stated. Ther are still a few big bucks in there, but 82 would be a world class resource if G&F woiuld just make it limited quota. That would be a great place to start doing some QUALITY management in Wyoming. A season structure like Colorado would work great. A few archery licenses, a few early rifle and a VERY FEW late rifle and we'd have some great deer. Those of us that are unlucky could at least plan to go take pictures of the monsters that would like there.

My 12 year old boy drew out this year for region W. We were going to check out 82. This will be his first deer hunt. We don't mind hiking. My cousin drew an early Idaho elk hunt in 66A during the same time frame Oct 1-14th. We probably only have 3-4 days starting in the middle of the hunt. Any general areas to check out would be helpful. It sounds like it will be crowded. Hoping to have a good outing for my boys first hunt. I was an unlucky 102 area applicant. You can PM me or email at [email protected]. Thanks alot. Greg
