yeap california A zone, Lots of snakes and 100 degrees. Hey we have the earliest deer seaosn in the country. I will be out there in about a month chasing deer around in the heat. Its better then sitting on the couch. Good luck everyone.

Real neat day!
I get to my area with my kid at first light.
I send him up into a draw where I killed my buck last year and had two others scouted this year, while I work quietly (what a joke! like walking on potato chips) around the backside of the knob.
I finally get to Thomas about 7:45 and I see that big grin.
He had a close encounter at about 68 yards with a forked horn and suddenly experienced a little ailment known as buck fever.
Arrow shaking in his hand as he fumbled to get set up.
It sure is different when you have a tag, isn't it?!
He took a couple more steps in the dry grass and got busted.
No shot fired, but he got a good dose of what fuels all of us.
It'll happen., Just not today.
No bucks spotted by me, half dozen does.
Probably 90 degrees out there right now.
Just about beer:30!
More updates later.

They are still in velvet, but they will strip in a week or so.
Our blacktails are way ahead of the curve, they rut in mid September too.
HH

won't scrape off the fuzz in "B" til end of 1st week next month or later... so I don't know about that! Never seen a blacktail in rut til late october or later... so I don't know about that!!
rm

in A-zone they almost always start rutting by the last week of september. with a little cold weather a week before season closes can really cause a successful last weekend.

I hunt Blackies in both A & B zones.
B zone bucks are from several weeks to up to a month behind A zone bucks in both antler development and rutting activity.

HH you're killing me! It's just doesn't seem right to be reading about hunting when we've still got 41 days to wait. Good luck to you and your boy. Looking forward to the day when my boy is old enough.
