I leave in 9 days for the smoke pole bull hunt on the Dutton and 14 days till the opener. It has been a lot of restless nights and a ton of money getting ready. I think the wife is ready for it to be here and over! It seems to have been a quite year for the archers so far. Has anyone heard of some suscess there yet? I was there Sept. 4th and they were still fairly quiet, are they starting to talk yet?

I was there last weekend, still pretty quiet heard a few bugles
right at first light then nothing after that.

Good luck...that rock pile will kick you butt if you hunt hard. There are some big old bulls on there though. Keep us updated.

Dillon

Thanks Dillon. I have been dreaming and waiting for the moment I finaly get to chase a big boy instead of passing on them for spikes for SO LONG! 12 years of spike hunting has taken its toll and I hope for nothing more than to have a chance at a big one. I wish you and everyone else the best of luck. With any luck, I will have something to show here in a couple weeks.

As of tonight, the bulls are still staying quite. A little action but not at all what it should be for this time in Sept.
I think the heat is slowing them down. Very hot and dry on the Dutton, bring a dust mask unless we receive some rain before your hunt. Good luck, there are some big bulls on the unit.

I was up on the Dutton on the 10th, 11th, & 12th with my son who drew an Archery permit. He's still up there trying to find something to poke an arrow into. We started out on the rumor of a big bull on the southeast end of the unit (Flake Mountain). Friday night on the 10th, just before dark a small herd of 20 with two bulls moved through the area. The biggest we guessed at 340-350, and the smaller bull was a five point. They never made a peep, and they were gone the next morning when we tried to re-find them. Something was moving them out. No bugling and no other fresh sign anywhere. We never saw anyone that looked like they were members of the infamous posse, and we only saw a few other hunters/scouters. My son is now trying up high with everyone else. He says he has seen a few more bulls, but nothing to shoot yet. He's only passed one oppertunity at a smallish 6 point at 60 yards. Tomorrow is his last day, so I hope he runs into something.

Good Luck, I hope the late rut this year works out for you on the Muzzle Loader hunt (mine too).

Thanks dleonard3. I have been seeing a fair amount of elk in my scouting, just not much in the way of good shooters. It has been a rough year so far. I appreciate the info and we will have to keep eachother posted and help eachother out. Hopefully the rut will be a good one for us muzzy hunters. I wish you the best of luck as well and if there is anything I can do to help, just holler.

utahbigbull, if you've been seeing a fair amount of elk, you're doing better than we did. My ML permit is for Monroe, but any late archery info my son comes up with on the Dutton I will let you know.

Like I say, I can't tell you how much I appreciate the help. I have seen elk every day of my scouting trips. Some times a lot, some times only a couple. But I have seen elk every day of my four weekend trips. But my concern is that I have seen a 330 class bull, four other bulls that were too far to tell with the wind blowing my scope just how big and then the rest have been little piss cutters, the biggest being a respectible 5 pt.. If you want, we can p.m. and exchange phone numbers so if you need help getting your bull out, I can jump the road to your unit and give ya a hand.

Down to 4 days left till I leave!! Holy crap, I can not believe after so many years of waiting, I am now getting the trailer loaded and ready for my chance to chase something bigger than a spike. I am going down Fri. the 24th about 2 a.m. to get my final 4 1/2 days of scouting in before the big smoke pole opener. I have butterflies in my gut so FREAK'N BAD.

just got back from the rock pile after a week of chasing ghosts.
had a great time and saw bulls every day. three of wich were shooters. i just couldnt close the distance with a the stick and string. passed on two bulls one a small 6x6 probably 290-300 range and the other a 6x6 about 320 a nice bull but just not quite what i wanted. They were starting to talk the on 15-16-17 but not aggresivley and would not come into any call still a little hot and dry. pm me if you need any info on were i was seeing the bigger bulls or where some good wallows are should be a slaughter for the rifle hunters and even better for the muzzy. good luck

Utahbigbull, I know exactly what you mean. I have a muzzy tag myself on Nebo and am pretty much counting down the hours and minutes until I head down next Monday. It's going to be a great hunt! Good luck!

I cant tell you mm'ers how much I truly appreciate all of the help. There are so many guys on here that are just like our own western brotherhood on this site. Yeah there are some conceded stuck-up pricks here but I have to say that this has really opened my eyes to how as hunters as a whole, we are willing to help a brother hunter out. THANK YOU TO ALL THAT HAVE HELPED ME GET READY!!

I think panic is setting in!! I can't freakn believe that I am getting the trailer loaded and as soon as my wife gets home from work tommorow night (Thursday), I am heading down to the Dutton to hopefuly find my bull to smoke on the muzzy hunt.

Good luck buddy! It should be a hunt to remember. The archery hunt on the Dutton was tough, but our struggle should end in reward for you. Those bulls should be tuned up pretty good by the hunt with the cooler weather that ksl showed Antimony getting. Best of luck and hope the knee holds up. Got an offer to hunt the opening day of the duck hunt so not sure if I will make it down next weekend. Keep me posted and if you need help with the pack, let me know. I also need to pick up my deer that is being butchered down there so let me know your camp location and I might be able to swing by if nothing else.

Will do Mike. This crisp morning air has by blood boiling. I'll give ya coordinates where we are at and if you could make it, great. Thanks
