Got it done!

30 yd shot. Bull down in 3 seconds and 40 yards. The VPA Terminator blew right through, stuck in the dirt and would still shave hair! Not a nick on the blades. Was an awesome experience that wouldn't have happened without the help of Bronson Ogden!

Congratulations on taking a beautiful big bull with your bow!

You look happy and have the right to be. It's a huge accomplishment to shoot such a great animal with a sharp stick.

Thanks for sharing your photos with us.

Congratulations Big Pig,

Awesome!!!

Seeing your post has me so excited. I remember all your questions posted on here about the area. It appears you had no need to be worried. Awesome Bull. Congrats again.

Look for a PM.

Great bull and hunt. Bronson is a heck of a great guy. I think he could spot a lone elk hair at three hundred yards. You were in very good company. Congratulations!

It went down like this...

We got up on top of a mountain above a face where my guide's dad had seen 6 bulls feeding that morning. Nothing. Nothing seen, nor heard. It was like it had shut off again. We got back into our routine of covering ground and stopping to call every mile or two. Finally we got a bugle and he sounded a ways off. We took off in his direction. We could tell we were getting closer but we had to climb up to a bench that we couldn't see over the top of. As soon as we top out, a cow busts us and takes the herd with her. We see the 340 bull running off. Dammit. He had been slipping in on us quietly and was a lot closer than we thought. Bronson thought he knew where they were headed so we got back on the wheeler and worked our way around. We stopped to call and got a response way up on top of this mountain. It was a different bull. Then we heard another bugle in the same direction. With 30 minutes of light left I'm thinking there is no way we can get up there
before it gets dark. I'm bummed as it sounded like a couple good bulls.

This is where Bronson's knowledge of the unit was worth every penny I paid. He pretty much said, "no worries, this road wraps around and there is a quad trail that climbs right up the back side." Awesome. We take it, park and hot foot it about 1/2 mile up into an aspen draw. We let out a few calls and the place erupts! Bugles everywhere. There was a freaking dinosaur sounding bugle on top, but a cow and small 5pt were blocking our approach. Darkness was closing in fast. Our only option was to call aggressively. I told Bronson to make it slutty! He knew exactly what I meant and layed out some serious whiny estrous calls. After just a few notes we hear sticks breaking and hooves pounding in hard.

We are in a forest of a thousand aspen trees. I don't have time to take a bunch of range readings. I could only range the one biggest aspen in front of me at 33 yards. As soon as I dropped my rangefinder I saw him charging in.. Good bull! Bronson looks at me with saucer eyeballs and says "SHOOTER"! Of course he can only see his strong side (right) as that is the side facing us. I didn't give a ######. I could see a big frame and I was shooting regardless.

The bull goes behind a clump of trees and I hit full draw for the first time of the hunt. He sprints in and jams on the brakes, as if on cue, right in front of the one tree I happened to range.

It's getting pretty dark and the only pin I can see well enough to shoot is my yellow 40 pin. I knew he was 30 so I held the 40 pin low and burned it into the brisket. I aimed hard, pulled through, and let the Gold Tip rip. It felt perfect. I thought I saw the arrow hit exactly where I aimed, and I definitely heard it hit. It cracked just loud enough to let me know I got through ribs, but not as loud as shoulder would have been.

I turned and looked at my guide, it went like this: "Dude, did you see where my arrow hit?"

"No, but it sounded good."

"Wait, shhh. Listen! HOLY ######! Dude, he's crashing!"

We put our binos up and see him down and kicking his last, just 40 yards in front of us. Of the 35 or so animals I have bowkilled, I have never seen one die so fast. This thing went no more than 40 yards and was down and dead in less than 3 seconds. Pretty amazing for an animal as big and tough as elk.

I've got to throw a plug in here. I know the result would have been the same had the bull been shot in the same place with any sturdy and strong broadhead, but this VPA Terminator continues to impress the heck out of me. It passed right through the bull, sailed 25 yards past and was lodged half an arrow length in the dirt. Bronson found it and was amazed too. There was not a nick in the blades. I put it to my arm and it would still shave hair! Love it.

So we did the awkward, jump up and down thing, with one guy trying to hug the other as the other wants to throw the high five. It didn't matter, we were stoked. It finally came together after so many close calls.

Bronson went to go get our packs, I knelt down and took it all in. I did get emotional. I said a prayer, gave thanks, and honestly had to fight off tears. The funnest hunt of my life was over, but best of all, I would now get to go home early to see my son. He is at a stage of his life where he is developing so fast now and I really missed him. Sitting next to this bull really brought that to light. I'd never felt this feeling before. It put life in perspective.

After 2 trips each we had the meat and quarters packed out. I went back for the last load of cape, head and horns. The heaviest load, but the one I wanted to bear most. We got back to camp at 1:30 am and were so tired it was all we could do to choke down a beer and a little food. I was so jacked I hardly slept a wink.

Up the next morning and back on the road for the 10.5 hr drive home. The realization of a dream hunt. It couldn't have worked out better.

Good for you BigPig, I have been waiting all season for this post, I figured you would stick a stud! Congrats!

I like the story alot, though it doesnt help my patience. My hunts are still a month away. But beautiful animal!

Great job on the bull, glad it worked out for you! We had some close calls and a few we passed on but in the end the elk won our game :)!, congrats!

?The bugle of the bull elk echo?s through the pines, the north wind moans her lonesome lullaby, he hungers for the freedom of an eagle as she flies?somewhere beyond the great divide?

Great job on a great bull. I have a brother in law thats been down helping his brother on the same unit and he said the hunting had been tough this year. Congradulations on a great bull.

Good Job. We were cheering for you. Very nice bull!
I think the unit is in Utah. Made a lot of noise a couple of years ago.
