I am in no way an expert at elk hunting. I've always preferred deer hunting to elk hunting, and kind of still do, but I've been obsessed with an elk that I found the other day. I know I'm making some amatuer calling mistakes, and just wanted you guys input on calling. For example, when to cow call, when to bugle, when to be quiet ect.. I called him in on Tuesday, even though he didn't answer back, he came to my cow call. I know it's kind of pre-rut, and maybe that's why he wasn't vocal. I was cow calling every 5 minutes or so calling once or twice. Today I went up and tried to get something again, and I didn't see anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Oh, I was using a hoochie mama, and a diaphraigm call (That I'm not sure if I sound good or not on)

A little calling goes a long way! Pay really close to what they are doing and how much they are calling and when. If its a high pressure unit they will call to locate and shutup on the way in. If you can work your way in a little closer they commit better than sitting where you are while he makes the whole trip to you. Practice practice practice! Calling elk really is an art, I'm ok at it but moderate at best. Just pay really close attention to what works and what doesn't.
Youtube and elk videos helped me a lot!
