My friend drew a Vernon tag because of the automatic entry from his dedicated hunter tag. He asked me to go out and scout with him. He nor I know very much about the unit. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dub

Dub,

I will help ya. I spent a ton of time out there 2 years ago. It was bleak at best. I hunted out there years ago and there was lots more deer. The best deer we found was a mid 20 5 point. There are quite a few lower 20 bucks, but with some luck a good one exists. It will be tough though.

Center your attention on the Sheeprocks. Simpson and Keg were almost deerless. Again, a good one exists out there also if you are lucky enough to find him.

Last year I went out a couple of times and the deer numbers seemed up from the year before. So who knows what you may find. Don't be fooled. There is water everywhere out there so that is not an issue. If it is a rifle tag I would wait until the weekenders head home. Archery I would definitely be on the east side of the Sheeprocks.

I am not sure Vernon is any better than a general deer tag? Lots less people though and they do get a big one or two every year.

Thanks KTC. I've chased a few coyotes around out there, but I've never spent time looking for deer. I'll give your suggestions a look.

Did you see any Elk out there?

Assuming you have a rifle tag don't let the crowds on the first morning get you nervous. They will go home and you will have the place virtually to yourself.

Don't ignore the high basins and flats with nothing but sagebrush, those wide open areas often hold good bucks. The brush can be very high and you will need to kick them in the butt to get them out but, it could be worth it.

I used to spend a lot of time in the vernon unit, worked out there in the summers I would ride up those canyons endlessly every evening on motorcycles, and we even had a cabin. If you want a really big buck, I would stay away from the Kegs, simpsons and sheeprocks. True there are some big deer out there, but unless the migration is just right the best you will see is a 20 inch buck, which tends to be the normal mature size of the local herd. If you are looking for the monsters I would stay south of vernon, tintic, bennion, harker etc. The east side of government can also be fairly productive. The more west you get the more desert like and the smaller the deer in general. Now if the weather is just right and the migration starts there can be some big boys heading accross the simpsons, but it doesn't happen often during the season.
