Whats happening everyone. I drew a tag for 18A. Does anyone have any info to share about the area or previous hunts.

Parnter:

I have some good news, bad news for you.

What you have is probably a glorifed camping permit.

IF you see a buck, odds are he'll be either a boomer or a fat forkie.

That's the good news.

Bad news is you probably won't see a buck, depending on where you go. This unit has a lot of thick PJ and some Pinion and seeing deer is tough.

About one in five hunters bags a buck and a few get real boomers. However like I said, expect to do a lot of hunting and very little killing in this unit.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know Gary Patterson???
Might have an opportunity on his ranch and might not.
Hoping for the best.

seeing some real nice bucks latley along the rr tracks at yampai. been seeing them on a real regular basis. jim

Good news is that everyone with this tag will now be checking out the railroad tracks around yampai.

AZG&F is the downfall of hunting in Arizona!!!!!

A friend from here where I live owns around 360 acres right in the middle of that area north of Fort Rock. All of the times that he has been there camping on his land in the past he said he NEVER seen any deer but had seen tracts a few times. He wasn't much of a hunter, more of a drinker so that may have something to do with it.
BUT he did say that the area is infested with "buzzies" in other words Rattlesnakes. I was there once back in 1995 and never seen a thing except them damn rattlers and a few jack rabbits.

Don't know if he still has the land, as he is going through a final divorce from his "B" wife.

Unit 18A has a relatively low density deer population, but as suggested above, 15-20% hunt success is not out of the ordinary. There definitely are a few good bucks taken out of this unit every year, but the hunting is tough. You will likely earn a buck if you get one. The area surrounding Truxton flat is probably your best bet. Hunt east to south of Nelson and west to the Cottonwood Cliffs, south to Hell's canyon. You might also try along the south side of Interstate 40 east of the Silver Springs exit. If you are very familiar with this unit there are numerous other small pockets you can hunt among the subdivisions that abound across the unit. This is not really a bad tag to have. Scout hard, hunt hard and Good Luck!
