any youth bulls down?

I know of 8 tag holders.... 1 tagged out. My kid missed one this morning, it was a tough hunt.

ive heard of 3 2 small 5by,s and one 340. all from the basin. and i think its a great opp for the youth. selfish people suck!!!

Slick,
Go ahead and give us your reasoning for why the tag sucks?

Is it because the "kids" might kill "your" elk and get to hunt when you don't? Chances are you won't kill a bull on the general units anyway given the success rates, so don't lose too much sleep. Is it because you never got that opportunity when you were that age?

I will never get the mentality that "because I didn't get to do it, you shouldn't be able to either" Times change and so do opportunities. There is nothing wrong with giving a few kids a great hunting opportunity/experience. It is good for all of us in the long run.

I'm with you slick, it makes me sick to think of dads out hunting with their kids. Kids should be at home playing video games where they belong!

my son is 0 for 3 as well. good news is he is only 15. 3 moore draws till he is to old. good luck to you next yr.

Every kid ought to hunt general units on weekends for 3 or more years before he/she even sees an elk. No success tell they pay their dues. Time changes everything, school does not let our kids out for the day before the deer hunt, we can't all draw tags so we can hunt together. Private ground is private. Now days it is difficult to give our kids the same experiences we grew up with. At least no one can take away all my memories of spending time with my family out hunting. It would sure be nice if my kids could have a chance to get hooked on hunting and all that goes with it. We need young hunters, not couch potatoes and gang bangers. I just threw that against the wall now I'll sit back and see if any of it sticks.

Well, I'm only 14 so I still have 4 more years left to draw. I grew up hunting. I started tagging along when I was four so I have been hooked on hunting ever since I can rememeber. For me this tag would mean a chance a decent bull, but to some other kids that haven't had the hunting opportunities that I have had and are not sure wether they will like hunting or not a tag like this could help them get into hunting, and our sport of hunting always needs more people involved so we can ensure that hunting continues for generations to come. So basicly these youth tags are good because they give kids more opportunities to hunt.
Just my 2 cents

What tag are you guys speaking of? I have 2 boys that just turned of hunting age and would like someone to fill me in on what youth hunt you are talking about? Thanks

PS. Slickrock maybe someday when you grow some balls you will have kids also and have what we all have! Until then S.T.F.U!

Got my cousin in on a 5 x 5. He missed but he wont ever forget it either. The bugling, the cows chirping. Good times. Now he wants a gun for Christmas. I think the tagged worked on converting another young man to hunting.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-28-10 AT 09:27PM (MST)[p]Ok! Listen up.... I'm probably a lot older than you oldmossback. I have 4 grandkids. Anyways, I'm not real comfortable with 12 year old kids packing high powered rifles.

My dad started taking me hunting when I was about 8 years old. Taught me gun safety... showed me how to clean a deer... talked to me about ethical hunting etc.

I did the same for my son. I hope to do the same with my grandkids.

We managed to kill our share of deer, elk etc. over the years starting when we were 16.... at least old enough to drive.

It is a bullsh!t tag in my opinion. Do 12 - 13 year old kids really need to kill anything? Or is this just another revenue generating ploy by the DWR?

I'm not accusing anyone of game hogging but you all know that sometimes daddy has to pull the trigger.

Slick

The kid down the street that I helped out ----- maps and intel with his dad----got a nice 290-ish 6x6 off the North Slope.

I also worked with a fellow out of Nv. that had his young daughter draw but I haven't heard from him.......

Slickrock, Yea your just barely older than me. I think you are putting all kids in the same catagorie. My kids have been shooting some sort of gun since they were both 4 yrs old.(not high power). They have been going along hunting with me since they were 8yrs old. They both took there hunters safty when they were 8-10yrs old. My oldest is 14 and took his 1st buck at 12 yrs old. They have ALOT more common since and safty then ALOT of adult hunters that I have seen out there. I think you are generalizing that all kids that have never experienced anything of the outdoors and hunting or handeling a rifle or shotgun.
I also think there are alot of 12-16 yr old kids out there who shouldnt ever handle a gun and can barely pull their pants up, let alone carry a high power rifle safely all day,but then their are the ones like mine who have grown up around guns and hunting their entire life and do just fine.

So can any one yet tell me what youth tag your all talking about????

Hey Slick!

Jr. took his 1st 6 point Bull Elk on a Youth tag at 14 years old,at a whoppin 75 pounds with a 300WSM!
Was that Ethical?
Well I'll clue you in on one thing,He wouldn't let Daddy pull the trigger!

I love not acting my age,
Damn I love my NASCAR race,
And Hell yes I love my Truck!

Get over yourself slick,

This Daddy has never nor will ever pull the trigger for my son or daughters. Not everyone is a poacher or an A hole.

And yes, 12 year old kids do "need" to hunt?

By your way of thinking, I guess Grandpa's should not get to hunt cause they might pull the trigger for their son's and grand son's!

Just cause you were not mature enough to pack a rifle at 12 does not mean others aren't. Mine does just fine. He has been taught gun safety, ethical shots, and the meaning of the hunt not just lobbing 500 yard shots at game.

There is NO better way to teach your youth hunting ethics than while he/she is hunting and this permit and others like it allow you to give them 100% of your attention. All the while not competing with 10,000 other hunters.

IMO, it is a very worthwhile tag.

I have to way in on this one,
I do not post here much but I disagree with anyone that has a problem with kids hunting! Kids are our future in the outdoors would you much rather have a kid watching TV,playing video games or getting ready for his next hunt?
My son got his hunter safety at the age of eight here in Utah.
Killed his first Whitetail in Tennessee that same year since then he has killed four whitetails and two turkeys one in Tennessee and one here in Utah.
He turns 12 this next year and he can't wait until he can hit the hills here in Utah and I will be right by he side. I will put him in for the youth anybull tag and if he draws we start hunting in September and end late October.
I would have giving anything to be able to start hunting with my dad at that age my first hunt with him was at the age of 14.My first kill with my dad was at the age of 16 and I will never forget it I just wish a had more.
Every November we head to Tennessee for Whitetail and April for the turkey hunt. Kids hunt for FREE up until the age of 16.Its a great opportunity for kids!
Every body that complains about young kids walking around the woods with guns remember that they will not be alone they are supposed to be accompanied by adults!

Slick is wrong, it is a decent tag and kids should get some opportunity. Doesn't affect the general hunt much anyways and everything is built towards LE tags nowdays in Utah. Over 20 years ago, I killed my first elk at the ripe old age of 13. Back then, you had to turn 14 that calendar year in order to hunt. Probably the smallest spike ever, but it was my first elk. I still remember that hunt to this day as one of my hunting highlights. By the way, it was just on the regular season rifle...13 year olds deserve, can and need to hunt.

One point that was made that I can't argue against, there are 13-16 year old kids that should not be allowed to hunt due to inmaturity or other issues. But, that is the parents job, not yours or the states to decide. There are plenty of others who can and should be given the opportunity to hunt. Hell, I had killed 4 bulls by the time I was 18 on general season tags.

There are a lot of more worthwhile things kids could be doing like: drinking, drugs, pornography, screwing around with anyone who'd let them just to name a few. Why would we want to get them involved in something that might just keep them from getting involved with these. your a champ slick, I like where your heads at.

I think Youth Tags are great !!

Hey Slick even better is the price of points and tag fees for youth in some states. !! Ya look them up? Huge discount, makes me want to have more !!! lol

youth hunts are for people 12 to 18 to have a chance hunting without all us old farts in the feild with at the same time. also to inspire moore youth to start hunting. thus creating moore sportsmen voters to assist in protecting our hunting rights. its about alot moore than kids getting first crack at the game. bet your kids are gona get excited for next yrs draw now....

No luck for my daughter. According to the GPS we put just over 22 miles on our boots in 4 days of hunting. We did get in to 6 bulls the last day before light, but by the time it was light enough to see they had moved off in to some private property and all the cow calling and bugling wouldn't bring them back out to where she could shoot.

For about 30-45 minutes there it was dang exciting for us though.

And even though she didn't get a shot, spending 4 long days with my 16 year old daughter who normally thinks dad isn't very cool was priceless.

Once again, you guys aren't listening! You are all good dads & moms. My point is why do these children need to kill something? Take them hunting... teach them!! That's what it's all about.

The DNR doesn't have to set aside tags for kids. The kids can go with you & learn.

When they are old enough, sixteen or so you don't have to worry.

You have tought them well.

Screw it... waste of breath.

Hope junior fills your tag this year hero.

Slick

Slick you're a total loser. My most fond memories were when I was hunting as a youth with my dad and he helped me take my first big game animals. I'll never forget those memories. Youth taking an animal can get a fire for hunting going in them that will last for the rest of their lives. Get over yourself slick, our youth are the ones who will keep hunting alive in this country after we are gone!

Got ya Dreamer. Next year dad will let you put a blade in your razor. lol

Slick

I just kind of breezed through some of the comments and i gotta add my 2 cents. Last Year my then 12 year old twins drew the late youth hunt. I was scared to death that they were not mature enough. We practiced shooting and not flinching and they were doing real good, but I got to say I still thought being that young they would chock. Well due to some good fortune we were able to hunt a farmers field as the elk were coming off the river and both boys did a great job. The bulls would not get closer than 3 hundred yards without getting closer to moo cows so I just told them to settle in and when they felt they had a clear shot go for it. one of my boys shot and put a good shot on a rag bull and he was done. The herd went out a hundred yards further and my other boy calmly dropped another rag bull and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. They definitly out did there old man. Layne

Slick you have already stated you are a grandparent, so you don't have a clue what problems the youth of today are faced with. I think the youth hunts are a great thing.

I agree the youth hunt sucks. . . but for different reasons. Mostly because the general elk units in utah suck.

Even though the hunt happens during the rut it can be a very challenging and mentally tough hunt and the success rates are pretty low. Unless you have access to private ground the elk are scarce in most areas. They are very educated because they get hunted hard every year. Anyone who has hunted the general units knows what i'm talking about.

I am a huge supporter of giving opportunity to youth. I just think it could be pretty discouraging for a 13 year old kid to hunt hard with little or no opportunities.

I wish the youth were given a hunt with a little more opportunity and possibly a better experience overall. I was a big fan of having the management hunts geared towards youth hunters.

my buddy had a tag a the first year we called in 3 bulls in 2 days the first 2 were very respectable general season bulls. He kinda treated his tag like it was a LE tag i woulda pulled the trigger on either of em. I dont have any kids but i dont think its a bull S##@ tag either. I have a little brother and i put him in every year for it. These kids are the foundation of our future as are the women hunters and with all the anti groups we need as many people involved in these great programs.

Never mind... apparently the little booger eat'n morons haven't killed any thing anyway.

At least nobody is posting anything up.

Slick

How about we get back to the original question, have any youth taken bulls this year? if so post up some pics.

hey screw you slick not all "little booger eating morons" have their daddy pull the trigger for them. i am about to turn 18 and i have always hunted with a bow. Ive never had a dad but i live with my uncle and he has never forced me to hunt or anything like that i just hunt because i love it. i have also always taken out all the big game animals i have ever hit. i don't take stupid or unethical shots so plz don't be trying to categorize all teens as immature because that seriously is not the truth.

Amen!!!

I concede. I hope everyone has a successful season.

The point was? why do you have to kill at 12 or 14 years old.

What is wrong with hunting and learning from your dad or grandpa until you are at least old enough to drive.

I sincerely apologize to those that have kids mature enough to handle a serious hunt like elk.

Take care? Slick

he was shaking so bad was surprized he could shot I love taking youth hunters they hear that bugle and then the excitment starts lots of fun

My little cousin who is 12, ended up with a spike. Waited till the last day hoping for bigger, but got his spike. Was proud of him. I wish I would have drawn when I was up for it, I only had a couple years to put in before I was too old. Think it is a great hunt.

Hey "slickrock" I think your rock is slick from your slime.

You are an idiot.

You are accusing "daddy" of pulling the trigger, hence youth tags suck.

Yep... you ARE an idiot.

Robb - Sorry I haven't been in touch with you since the hunt ended, it's been a crazy couple of months! We are trying to fill a couple of tags in Nevada right now, I'm hoping to have them done here in the next 4 to 5 days and I will get in touch with you then. Thanks again for your help.
