Just wanting to see who else drew this tag. My wife drew it this year and is going to give it to our 17 year old son. What a gift??? I can't wait to go.

My hunt Partner drew this Great Tag,#11,as a N.R.Oh yes,by the way He had "Max" bonus points --- Good Luck

I admit, I drew a 13B tag this year with my long time hunting partner, my oldest son and my grandson, 4 tags altogether. I am really getting enthused about this hunt. I've been to the Strip a time or two but never to hunt for myself or family. We are all looking forward to it, plan to do some scouting and hard hunting. Wish us well! Anybody have any suggestions?

Interesting, you can "transfer" ownership of a limited tag in AZ? I didnt know that. Good luck to your son and congrats. Hope his hunt is great!

life IS good

LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-06 AT 04:07AM (MST)[p]I drew it, tag number 9, NR with max points, I also drew the Montana Super Tag for Elk, the odd 1 in 17,103. Should be a good fall!

Not to start a fight, but I wonder if the woman who drew the 13B tag ever actually intended to hunt the unit, or whether she was a front for her son from the beginning.

I know a guy who drew 13B this year. A few years ago he drew the Pahvant elk tag in UT and killed a monster. Some people have more than their share of luck.

BTW, I hope the boy receiving the 13B tag from his generous mom kills a big one.

Doesn't matter if she intended to hunt or not it is her option to do with as she chooses.

Thats great that you folks were lucky enogh to draw this coveted tag. This can be an extremeley difficult hunt very few deer and a lot of country. Have any of the tag holders considred hiring a guide or are you going to do it yourself?

Heads-up for everyone on transferring tags to juniors here in AZ. (I'm assuming KAMX7 knows this already...). The tag can be transferred, but the person who drew the tag has to go hunting with the junior. No staying back at home and no staying back at camp. I think the rule is that the person who drew the tag has to be within 50 yards of the youngster when they are hunting.

This rule was put into place for an obvious reason, which is to ensure 'non-hunting' moms/dads don't put in for tags with the sole intent of giving their hunting children more chances at tags and having no plan to go hunting themselves.

You are 100% correct Stanley, it is 50 yards or something like 500 feet and we cannot wait to go. Never considered hiring a guide since I am already one and had the tag in 2000.

The only draw back is pulling him out of school which is the time when Basha could be in the state play-off's in Football. Since he is playing on the team and then he will also play basketball for them.

I guess he will be sick for about 10 days in a row.

R12-4-121 Big Game Permit or Tag Transfer doesn't mention the 50 yard rule or any of the other items listed above. It does mention that the minor child must be between 10 and 17, have a valid hunting license and have completed the Department Approved hunter education course. Are there supplemental rules in a different section ?

Good luck to your son by the way.

oooo.... Maybe I'll stand corrected on this one. Teach me to spout off without checking my facts. I'll do some checking though.

I saw this debated on another site, and several folks had quoted this rule, but I don't recall if they actually were quoting a 'real' rule or not. I'll see what I can find-out.

I have never seen it in writing but I have heard the same thing many times over the last 2-3 years.

My 10 year old son just completed the hunter safety class here in az. This very topic came up and the instructors said the same thing about a fifty yard rule.

It might be a good time to call the dept and ask. I would not be satisfied until I asked someone in the know too. Many times the people answering the initial phone call don't know as much as they should. At least that has been my experience.

Congratulations on drawing such a wonderful tag. I wish your family all the best.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-06 AT 05:21PM (MST)[p]Found it: A.R.S 17-332. Part D, section 2, paragraph b. (Man they really buried it in there.... ;-) ) "The parent or guardian must accompany the child in the field and must be within fifty yards of the child when the animal is taken."

Interesting that they have "Arizona Laws", and then "Commission Rules". Not sure of the difference. Just noticed it while researching this.

Good luck to your boy! Now that mine is old enough to hunt, I know that if he ever doesn't get drawn that I'll be donating my tag to him. NOTHING LIKE SEEING YOUR CHILD HUNT! Luckily for him (and me) he got a junior tag down south this year.

Hope he bags a BIG ONE!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-06 AT 05:46PM (MST)[p]Wow, I'd have never found it thanks for following that up.

Good luck to your son also.

It is specifically stated on the regulations that it does not contain all laws and regulations regarding hunting. It gives a brief overview. All laws are in ARS. They usually will only provide a brief description of the rule in the regulations. Most states are like that. For example, CO has a law that allows nonresident students to buy resident tags. It is also stated in the regulations. What is not stated however, is that it also includes spouses and children of the student. ALWAYS look up any rule you have a question about. Don't always count on the people who answer the phones either. Most of the time they don't know, or provide incomplete or false info. When I called and asked about the student/spouse law they said it didn't exist. Well it does. Whatever you find in writing will hold up when needed, however that is not the case if someone just tells you something.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-25-06 AT 11:21AM (MST)[p]So, technically the parent/tag holder could be "out in the field" (a vehicle per say) as long as they make it to the child/hunter before the animal is taken.

KAMX7,

I hope that your son gets a great chance at a monster. If you have guided up there you know there are not big numbers of deer and it is a hard hunt yet when you see bucks "oh my." I was able to take a 189 typical there in 03. Great hunt and I wish that for your son.
As far as the football is concerned it depends on how understanding your head coach is. I have coached under four head coaches. One would have said go have a great time with your dad. One would have made it very hard on him and may not have played him in the next game. I guess you have to look at priorities and his contribution to his team.
But this is a once in a lifetime hunt! A dream of mine is to take my son with a tag there someday.
