2 part question. I have always hunted with a Ruger 300 mag. with Leopold 4-12 scope and been happy with it for deer and elk except for the heavy weight. It is synthethic and 10 years old. Looking to change.

What do you hunt with and why?

Have you tried the Christiansen Arms Barrel/gun and if so how do you like it.

Thanks for the feedback and Good Luck this year!!

I have a Christensen Arms rifle in 7mm rem mag. It is so light that I put my 8.5 X 25 Luepold side-focus scope on it and have it dialed in out to 700yds. Last year I shot an elk by ranging it(398yds) and then dialing in the MOA for an exact hold. She dropped like a rock. This is my go to gun unless I am dog hunting then I love the bushy. It shoots an honest .3 group with my handloads and I have the utmost confidence in this rifle. the only thing I might change is getting a different barrel in 7mm STW. Christensen does a good job, but will be slower than they say.......Like all gunsmiths.

My deer gun is a remington mountain rifle in 270 cal with a leupold 3x9 on it, It gets the job done on deer, it was my elk rifle to untill i got the hankerin to buy a new rifle so i bought a remington 300 win mag which is now my new elk rifle. has 2 elk and one deer under its belt already.

TIKKA T3, 300 WSM, 6 lbs of the best deal on a great gun you'll find. Tack driver, light weight, precision crafted, and AFFORDABLE! I'd buy it again in a heart beat!

"Roadless areas, in general, represent some of the best fish and wildlife habitat on public lands. The bad news is that there is nothing positive about a road where fish and wildlife habitat are concerned -- absolutely nothing." (B&C Professor, Jack Ward Thomas, Fair Chase, Fall 2005, p.10).

.280 Remington in a Mountain Rifle, 300 WSM by Christensen Arms. I am torn every year in deciding which to use....both are easy on the shoulder, and both are tack-drivin' mules!

300 wby mag deluxe. Very beautiful gun and shoots amazing. For deer i shoot 150 nosler partitions. Since i have had it, all my kills have been drop in there tracks one shot kills, except for one and i shot another time cause i really didnt want it to run to the hell hole.

I really want to get a 257 wby mag in the ultralight i think or go and buy a custom gun like a christensen arms or a Jarret rifle maybe.

I shoot a Remington 700 classic in .270 with a fixed 6X leupold scope...works well for deer and elk. The only times I have had any problems were operator error! ha

300 weatherby ultra lite 4.5x14 leupold VX III

very lite and shoots great

7mm Rem. mag. mountain. It is the second one I have used in 38 years. I did put a new scope on it a few years ago, a 3.5x10 leupold with a premier reticle good to 600 yards.

For years it was my Remington 700 mountain rifle in 30-06, but lately its been my Remington 700 CDL in 270, topped with a leupold scope. Both are tackdrivers.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-06 AT 04:00PM (MST)[p]I was way disappointed with Christenson. They took way longer than I was told, the rifle wouldn't shoot to their guarantee and they could not make it shoot after fighting with them for two.5 years. I sold it.

The Tikka is a great gun for the money, I agree. Also look at the Sako Finnlight. Costs more but a damn fine rifle right outa the box.

Sorry Predator, I know you love your rifle. It is a great caliber........

I have a few to choose from but Lately My "GO TO"
Deer rifle has become my 700 Titanium in 260 Rem. It wears a 3-9x40 Leo and gets the Job done fine.
Pretty Light to pack around too;)

Used to have the Sako TRGS in Warbird, couldn't afford to buy ammo, wasn't reloading then, sold it, bought a Winchester Mod 70 .300RUM, synthetic, stainless, with Nikon Monarch 4-12. I only own Winchester Mod. 70's and one Ruger M77. Don't care for Remington. My buddy bought his son a Tikka in .300 WSM, and loves it, says he wishes it was his. Scott/couesbitten

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-06 AT 06:57PM (MST)[p]Rem. 700 BDL/synthetic stock in .300 Win. Mag.

If it lives in North America and bleeds, I can kill it. And it's paid for!:)

I started hunting with a Savage model 110 in .30-06 that my dad passed down to me. I broke the stock on it hunting one year and bought a Remington 7400 in .30-06 from my step dad. I actually liked that gun prety well and shot it well to. I was always a fan of the bolt action though, so I bought a Ruger .338 Win Mag when I was a junior in High School and basically used it as my any hunt gun for 6 years. I killed plenty of deer and a few elk with it but wanted something different, especially for deer and antelope. 4 years ago I decided it was time for a change. I bought a Wby Mark 5 Synthetic in .257 wby mag and haven't looked back since. When I decided on a new gun, I really wanted something that not a lot of guys that I knew had. Friends tried to convince me into just buying a .270 or .30-06, but I just wanted something different. I looked at a lot of guns and calibers. The short/fats were intriguing, but I just didn't like the feel of the guns that they were available in. When I first picked up the weatherby, it just felt right. It was the first rifle that i put up to my shoulder that actually felt like it belonged there. It is my go to gun now. I handload 115 grain x bullets and get consistent sub moa accuracy with it. it is a shooter. I do regret not shucking out a couple hundred more for the light weight version, but it has served me well in the last four years. It is still a bit light for elk, but I pack it anyway because I know that I can put the bullet right where I need to. I never had that confidense with my .338 winny or the remington, but can't force myself to let go of the them. I think it is that I just like have guns, the more the better.

Bansner sheep hunter .300 win. with a 3-10 Swarovski. light , accurate. only flaw is the price.

Sendero 7mm STW wearing an Aetec 6x20. Unbelievable accuracy. I need a sherpa to lug it around though. The only downfall is it's weight. Awesome gun though!

Browning a-bolt stainless stalker 30.06 with 3x9 leopold.
good gun, shoots good, heavy though.
looking into getting one off those short fat calibers...i like the idea of a flatter shooting rifle, but haven't had any problems yet.

Rem 700 ADL 7mm Rem Mag with Leupold 3x9. synthetic stock. Shoots my handloads to 0.5 MOA. That's all the accuracy I can use with these aging eyes.

Phantom Hunter

My main gun is a 300RUM Christensen with 4-16x50 Swarovski. I'd hate to be at the receiving end of this setup! It's served me well over the last 6 years.

My backup is a Sako 75 270 with a 4-12x50 Swarovski.

Soon to join the family is a 270WSM Christensen as light as they make 'em. Still usure on what I'm gonna top it with, but my guess is it will have a little hawk on it.

I want something for the sheep hunt I'm never gonna be able to afford cause I have too many guns:)

For an all around caliber it's hard to beat the 300RUM, or 300 Win for that matter. I just like a little extra juice for the 400+ yard shots.

May have to break down and get a 338 Lapua one of these years for some real longrange stuff.

Sako Finnlight 300wsm, topped with a brand new Leupold LS 4.5-14x50 with the varmit recticle for longrange shooting, love to shoot the gun and also very pretty.

thats the same rifle and scope I have. Best rifle I have ever shot.

Remington 700 338-06 lefthand.
Douglas Premium barrel.
Pacific Research syn. stock.
Bolt face and trigger work.
Leupold Vari-X111 2.5x8.
Leupold Weaver style QR rings/mount.
All matte finished.
Off the used rack $600 w/brass,dies,primers and bullets(less scope).
.50" 4-shot 100yd. all day. Best is .40".
1.00" 4-shot 200yd. all day. Best is .75".
225gr. Nosler Accubond.
I hope to have a 1/4 rib express rear and a banded front sight on someday.

This year, I'll mostly pack a Mathews Switchback set a 65 pounds. 20 to 70 yard sight pins on a Montana Black Gold sight, but I'll only shoot to 45 yards.

For my rifle hunt, I'll use my trusty Rem 700 LH, custom made by David Gentry in Montana. (Had it made before there was a 300 mag available in LH.) Topped with a Leupold 4.5X14 42mm scope. Shoot 180 grain noslers at almost 3100FPS. It's heavy but stable and is more accurate than I can shoot.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-03-06 AT 03:40PM (MST)[p]For deer a 270 Win. Model 70 stainless w/black synthetic stock and a 3-9x40 Leupold vari-x II (also in stainless). Not too fancy but it shoots flat enough out to my comfort range and is consistant at shooting sub 1" groups. I have taken a dozen or more muley bucks with this setup.

For elk I was a big fan of the 300 WBY. untill ammo began getting too expensive. Now I use a 7mm WSM in the Winchester model 70 black shadow trim and it is topped with a Nikon buckmaster 3-9x40 scope. Ammo is fairly affordable and it shoots the 160 grain accubond loading from Federal absolutely great! This combo has accounted for several bulls, 3 of which have droppped in their tracks.

Anything under 350 pounds live weight a customized Winchester Model 70 270. Topped with a Leupold Var X-III 2.5x8 In heavy timber under 200 yards I use a 150 grain Hornady round nose bullet. Over 200 yards on the plains a speer spitzer 130 gr.

North of the border and U.S heavy-weights a 300 Weatherby fibermark with a Schmidt & Bender 2.5 x 10, using 200 grain speer grand slams. Ten pounds empty, so it's no lightweight, but it saved my butt from a female grizz with an attitude problem!

30-338 win mag on remington 700 action that is lapped and blue printed with a 26 inch lilja stainless steel berrel. Shillen trigger and a rim rock stock, on top sits a burris 3x9 with ballistic plex with talley rings and bases. pretty good gun

Elk Hunting I cary my 30-378 WBY mag and bring my old Browning 308 as a back up.
Deer Hunting I cary my 257 WBY mag and my 25-06 as a back up.

.270, Mauser bolt action, synthetic thumbhole stock, that I put together myself with a 3x9 Leupold scope.
140 grain Accubond handloads will hopefully find a monster this year that makes me squeeze the trigger.

Got sick of carrying my .300 Winchester Mag. Remington Sendero all over the hills.
Besides I have only needed to shoot past 200 yards once in the past 26 years of hunting Colorado in all types of terrain imaginable..

Best,
Jerry

Browning a-bolt hunter 2 in .338 Win Mag with a weaver 3x9(for elk and deer), Remington M700 30-06 with a leupold 2x7(backup for elk and deer trips) and my 1954 era Winchester M70 in .257 Roberts with a vintage weaver 4x post reticle sight (for antelope and deer as well as coyotes and gophers.

.300 Ultra Mag with Leupold glass. It has worked well at close ranges, and if you need it for a long shot, why risk a lesser rifle? mtmuley

>Pre-64 Model 70 .300H&H topped with

Same thing with a Leupold. Because history trumps technology.

Model 700 7mm Rem Mag
Black Pacific Research composite stock
Leupold 3X9 Scope w/Leupold rings
Black leather sling
(This has been a very reliable and accurate companion. I have a lot of confidence in this rifle with the loads I shoot and I can't say enough for the Pacific Research stalk as it has really been a great addition to this rig)

Back up Rifle...
Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 30-06
Leupold 3X9 scope
(Very reliable, the old stand by)

I do hope to get a new Leupold 4.5X 14 scope at some point.

Just got a Remington 700 synthetic in 300 WinMag with Leupold 4/5-14 VX III 2 years ago. I actually added 2lbs to the butt stock b/c i didn't like the feel of the extra light stock in the rear. total weight is a bit heavy for some people but i like it. It's easier on the shoulder and settles in nicer. Does a great job. Shoots great and has enough knock down for elk out to 400 plus depending on your ability.

Have carried a Remington 700 in 270 for past 20 years but my wife carries that now. Great gun for elk and deer too.

One more for the 300 Weatherby Ultra lighweight with 4.5x14x40MM, VX-III, 30mm tube with B&C reticle. I have a muzzle break on it. I can shoot much farther than my 30-06 Rem 700 Mountain Rifle. The 300 wby shoots awesome, is very lightweight, and will put anything down (in the US)that it hits. Only problem is with the muzzle break you MUST were hearing protection. I would like to top it with a Swarovski PH TDS 3X12. These scopes are the best.

I go back and forth between my Ruger Model 77 .270 Win (with the tang safety- very important) and a Winchester Model 70 stainless synthetic in .300 Win Mag.

I shoot 130 grain sierra gamekings out of the .270, and 150 grain interbonds out of the .300. Don't need a .300 to kill deer, it just balances well and feels good when you pull it up to your shoulder.

WH

Main one for hunting is a Browning SS Stalker .280 Rem w/Leupold scope in Matte finish.
Back up and for larger game is my old Weatherby Mark V (Germany)in 300 Magnum and now with a Zeiss 3X9 Scope.

Put in "retirement" my Custom Belgium FN Mauser action 7x57mm with a Leupold Scope 2x7.

Brian

Main rifle:
Weatherby 300 Mag Vanguard w/ Gary Redder custom brake & Timney trigger
Leupold Mark 4 M1 4.5-14x50mm

The rifle does what it is supposed to do and with the setup if I have 500 yd+ shot with low wind I am confident in taking it. I don't think everyone should shoot out that far, but if you practice a lot you can be consistent. And if I have to shoot that far on a elk I know and have seen that I'll still have plenty of energy. Used on everything from Coues to Elk. If you have bad shot placement on a Coues don't plan on getting any meat though.

Backup:
Winchester Model 70 Ultimate Shadow 270 WSM
Leupold Mark 4 M1 3-9x40mm

Great accurate gun out of box that shoots flat with alot of downrange energy. 270 on steroids.

Deer: Remington 700 ADL, 25-06, Fajun classic laminated
stock, 100 gr Nosler's, Healthy dose of IMR4831.
Get the grease hot.

Elk: Remington 700 BDL, .300 Win. Mag, Boyds laminated
thumbhole stock, 180 gr Noslers, Healthy dose of
IMR 4831 or RL22.
Same as above, just need more grease.

I carry a 300 Win mag with 4X Zeiss scope. I use this gun for deer, moose, elk, sheep, goat not only because I know what I can and can't do with it, but also because there could be a grizzly behind the next tree.

If we're not supposed to eat animals, why are they made of meat?

Poor young guy here

Win. Model 88 lever in .308 wearing a 3x9x50 simmons.

This is my first year hunting with a rifle that wasn't a front-stuffer and this gun was a gift from my wife's grandfather who bought it new it 1970 and did a glass-bedding and custom stock job. We'll see how it does on deer. Sticking with the knight Wolverine disc .54 for elk.

Weatherby Ultra light chambered in 7mm Rem Mag. 4.5X14 Leupold VXIII w/ BC reticle.

I'm with you mtmuley 300 RUM. 4-16 swarovski with tds reticle. I've been shooting swift sciroccos but I'm going to try barnes new mrx bullets. If you can handle the kick there is no substitute for horsepower at longer ranges!

i carry a 7mm winchester rifle. and thats only because it will take anything down that i hit

I use a pre-64 model 70 Winchester standard in 30-06 with Leupold 2-7. Nosler 180 grain partitions. This combo never fails me. Used this rifle and caliber since '62.

Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter III in .325 WSM with Bushnell Elite 3x9. Love it, the Model 70 fits me much better than my Rem. 700 30-06(which I still really like)

Nails.

Winchester M70 Featherweight in .300 WSM 'cause it is so pretty and so nasty on elk. It just fits nice, carries well, and I feel lucky when I take it for a walk.

Ruger M77 in .30-06. Bought it when I was 13 years old with money I had saved working summer jobs. Other rifles have come and gone, but I always end up with her when hunting season rolls around. Not the newest or the hot new caliber, but we get the job done.

High Tech Customs- .340Wby on a Rem 700 action. Scope is an IOR 3-18x42 Tactical. Its good to go from 10yds to 800yds. Total package weighs about 8lbs. I love this combo. Its very light and extremely accurate. I have the utmost confidence with this rifle.

Planning to fill a Nov. 6A bull take with my brand new Savage Weather Warrior in 300WSM and topped with an Alpen 4.5-16X50 scope. The rifle & scope are getting hitched at the gun shop as we speak.

For Varmints, Antelope and Farm Whitetails: Ruger M77 Synthetic Stainless 243 topped with a Nikon Monarch UCC 6.5 - 20 shooting 55 grain ballistic tips or 100 grain partitions depending on the game.

For Muleys and Sheep: Ruger M77 Synthetic Stainless 7MM topped with a Nikon Monarch UCC 5.5-16.5 shooting 160 grain Barnes TSX. Has had some smith work on it to float the barrel, stone-grind and adjust the trigger to 3 lbs.

For Elk: Ruger M77 Synthetic Stainless 300 Win. topped with a Nikon Monarch UCC 4-12 shooting 200 grain Accubonds. Has had some smith work on it to float the barrel, stone-grind and adjust the trigger to 3 lbs.

For Bear and the future Brown Bear Hunt: Remington 700 Stainless 338 Ultra Mag topped with a Nikon Monarch UCC 5.5-16.5 shooting 225 grain Accubonds but will switch to TSX, A-Frames or Northforks before I go after Brown Bear.

"Be a straight-shooter in all that you do."

Ruger MK77 stainless synthetic with 3 X 9 Leupold in .270 caliber. Have used it on deer, antelope, coyotes and ground hogs with excellent success. I put a new timney trigger on it this summer. I like it because it is lightweight, fits me well, and is great in bad weather. It shots as well as I can aim. It hits where I point it. My back-up gun will be Ruger # 1 which I just bought this summer. Got it used buy it is in excellent condition and shoots real sweet. Also .270 caliber. Very nice walnut stock so it will be a fair weather shooter.

Weatherby mark IV stainless ultra light .257 mag
topped with an Leupold LPS 2.5 X 10!
back up is an ("HOT") Ruger M77 7mm mag W/ lightforce tac scope and I have killed Bucks AT 55O+ Yrds with this gun(mostly just to much gun)!!!
rm

Ruger M77 -.280 topped w/ 3x9 Leupold. 1st rifle I bought with my own money 10 years ago and probably wont need to buy another one. Have taken my last 20 deer, antelope and pigs with it. Most important thing as you all know is how comfortable you are with your gun. Thats why I stick with one. Used to shoot a .243 when I first started hunting w/ my Dad. Flat shooting and hardly any kick. Thats what my kids will use 'til they're big enough to handle more gun. I thank my Dad for starting me off light. The worst thing you can do is flinch. Now I'm just babbling!

For mule deer a 7MM Rem. Ultra mag. shooting 140 Nosler Acurbond at 3,475 FPS--flat shooting with managable recoil.

This is my first year shooting a Browning .300 wsm stainless synthetic with Leupold Rifleman 4-12; it weighs 6 lbs. and shot bulls at the range this last Sunday. Hopefully, it will fill a monster deer tag on the High Hunt, and my any bull permit for Bethel. more later...

I shoot a Savage Mt rifle chambered for Lazzeroni Patriot. It is the .308 short magnum. It is nice and flat shooting and accurate without a bunch of kick.
