Nevada ranking

To me, Nevada ranks very high, from my limited experience in Nevada. Its a quality hunt, with low hunter pressure, and a chance at a good buck. Its nice to see more deer than hunters. Plus I have a tag this year. Down side is the wait between tags. Worth the wait, though.

yes nevada is good compared to some other states, but it is nothing like it used to be. Between the fires burning up some habitat and the fish and game maybe not doing as good as job as they should.

I have been on 4 deer hunts in Nevada since 1993. Each time I hunted a different unit--51,43-46,111 and 33E. In all of the units we saw very few other hunters...that is really nice. I have also taken some nice bucks. I would put Nevada towards the top of my list.

I hope to see few hunters and just a couple wall hangers this year.I will rank Nevada after my hunt this fall.
114-115.

nevada is one of the worst. i wouldn't waste my money. oops, i guess i did and drew a good tag this year !!!!! good bucks and not a lot of crowds. been gone awhile, can't wait to retire so i can go back home(elko)

There's plenty of good bucks in area 043-046. He should definitely hold out for a mature 4x4 or better. Check the NDOW Hunter Information Sheets for good areas to start looking for deer. Last year success was 68% with 41% 4-points or better. This is pretty impresive as many hunters are satisfied with just hunting near the roads and shooting a small buck. Basically, anyone that puts forth some effort and gets just a little ways from the roads will be able to pick and choose a nice buck.
As far as Nevada's ranking, I'm not sure we can be ranked that high as our oppurtunities to hunt are extremely limited. Compared to other states we have very few animals but our system of conducting spring and fall aerial surveys of almost every area combined with conservative quotas, means excellent quality.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-04-06 AT 09:51PM (MST)[p]My wife has that tag and I live in that unit and have been up there a few times this summer. As for trophy quality, your friend shouldn't have a problem getting a descent mature buck, but I wouldn't pass anything in the 160" class. A rumor I heard was that there's one heck of a buck in the unit, but it's a lot of country. I would hunt that last week of the season.

Thanks for the tips guys! I will let him know what to expect. I also live near that unit but haven't hunted it much. I am sure he will be happy with a good four point.

NVbkblstr,
I agree with you about how Nevada does their surveys I think they do the best job of actually counting animals of any Western State. Nevada does an excellent job managing their very limited resources that's for sure.

I lived in Reno from 92-99 and those were some awesome years to hunt. I'd say Nevada is right behind Colorado as far as deer hunting goes.
The best part about hunting Nevada is seeing very few hunters if any in the field while archery hunting.
