calif X3A WOW

I don't think there's very many Calf. guys on this forum. Try http://www.jesseshunting.com/ for information on X3A. It would probably help to give a little more explanation as to why you applied for an area you know nothing about. Is this your first deer hunt? They will give some general information and tips but I think they are more willing to help people that have shown some initiative, such as scouting the area first. Good Luck on your hunt.

I'm a CA guy. I hunted X3a last year. Scouted it twice before the season. Saw some pretty nice bucks while they were in the velvet.
There is very little pressure in the area I hunted, saw only one other camp and the only other hunters I saw were road hunters. And only two of them at that.
Deer numbers are still down in this zone. Some blame the lions, I did see some lion sign, and the biologists blame the habitat. If you aren't to picky about how big a buck you'll be happy with just road hunt, a quad would work best, and you'll kill a buck. Now if you are huntin horns you'll have to work hard or get lucky, more than likely both. I hunted hard for 5 days and shot the biggest buck I saw on the hunt. He was a heavy and tall 23" wide 3x2. My uncle shot a 21" 4x3 on day six. We got a tip from a cowboy and shot the buck just off the road where he said it was.
If you would like to know the spots I hunted PM me.

Didn't mean to sound so critical. I've definitely applied for new areas based on the odds. Just trying to help, since you didn't have any responses. I still would try over at Jesse's and check the Calf. fish and game web site. If you can track down a biologist or game warden for that area, they will usually give some pointers as well. Good Luck.

thanks for the info nvbkblstr ive hunted for many years and like to try new places got a 170 2/8 in nevada last year it was great. going up to x3a this weekened to scout

LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-06 AT 09:00PM (MST)[p]Wow.... so that's what I been doin' wrong... apparently I'm supposed to pre-scout the entire state before I settle on a zone and apply for tags... hell, I better get busy 'cause I'm applying for alota tags in like 6 or 7 states...

By the way, Onecut, congrats on a good tag you should do well with that... fun country to hunt.

I plan on drawing a tag for the Goodale hunt in the next 6 or 7 years- anyone know where I should start looking for a good buck?!! HAHA There will be people on this site that will help and some wont. Take the good with the bad. Most will help though.....knock on wood.

ONECUT - I wish I could help more, but I've never hunted California. I used to apply, but could never draw a tag so I gave up. If you draw in Nevada again look me up on here. For hunting deer I mostly know the northwest and local areas around Carson. Although, with the gas prices so high I've only scouted close to home this year.

I was kidding but I'll save it for when I do get drawn in 6 or 7 years!! Thanks a bunch. I worked with a guy who got drawn 3 out of 7 years- can you believe that? What luck. Anyway- he showed me some very nice bucks he had taken. Thats a great hunt.

I went to the link you said and its just a bunch of posts about a guy who got drawn- not much info that I didnt already know. It was an interesting read though.
