I just got a call from fish & game saying that I was next in line for this hunt if I want the tag. With work going full speed and grape harvest being a few weeks late I am not even sure I can get vacation time. If I can only get 4 or 5 days off can I do this hunt justice with little time to research? Is anyone willing to help with some general areas to start?

Thanks
Bill

How many points will you be burning? That makes a big difference. If it's a freebie and you only had a few points, I'd take the tag, but it will be a tough hunt and with only a few days, you'd better be prepaired to eat tag soup.

If I had more than 5 points in it I'd wait unless I could get the whole hunt off work.

Just my $0.02

Cheers,
Pete

I am going to tell you the San juan late hunt is one of the harderst hunts around even the locals being so close can not seem to find the bigger bulls during the late hunt, if you do not have the time to scout for atleast 5 days before your hunt you will have a hard time.. I have helped 2 times on this hunt and one went unfilled and the other shot one on the last day of hunt in the deepest ugliest canyon we could find.

its a good hunt success if you are not wanting a big bull, the success on big bulls is not that good, its a good hunt if you just want an opportunity, but dont be disappointed if you end up with a rag horn on this hunt.

With limited time, I'd give the BTO boys a call and see what they would tell ya. They might still have an opening available. They'll do you right.

Last year was a good snow fall year though, and some snow makes the late hunt down there a lot easier, but when it comes it usually comes so heavy that it closes most roads off to four wheel travel so its a catch 22.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-10 AT 07:46PM (MST)[p]One of the other reasons I have not picked this hunt to apply for is that many of the good bulls have broken tines by that time.

That said, if I got the chance, I don't think I could pass it up. However, if I have very limited time, there is no question I would use Black Timber Outfitters (BTO)

An average age of almost 7 years old seems pretty good as well.

Thanks everyone. I am going to get the tag, I think it would be worth the 2 points. I deer hunted the Blue Mtns about 15 years ago and know that the lower scrub oak was thick. Time to order maps and start talking work into letting me take the whole week off. This would give me 6 to seven days to hunt. At what elevation should the elk be at that time of the year?

Thanks again
Bill

I don't know, 2 points and a 5 year waiting period after that. You could have 7 points before you wll be able to put in again. If you take those 7 points and put in for 7 more years you could almost draw the same tag for sure. What to do???? Take the bird in the hand and have a great time. Besides, you put in for the tag so you must have wanted it. ENJOY!

Take the tag and hunt now.

My brother had this tag last year, we hunted hard for five days. We spent two days hunting low, and couldn't turn up anything more than a rag horn. We spent the next three days hunting high, lots of cows, and little bulls. We finally turned up a 320 bull, and it was on. This was the biggest bull we seen alive during the hunt. My brother drew the tag with one point, and was happy with his bull. We seen lots of guys bringing out little fives, and sixes. The only bull we seen bigger than my brothers, was some guys camped by us, they killed a 330 bull. It was one of the funnest hunts i've been on, and one of the most frusterating.
