I've spent many years enjoying this site and I've finally decided to post my first post. Let me quickly share my story. My dad, brother and I spend a lot of time in the hills come September and had made a couple of short trips to our hunting area already. However, things had been pretty quite early. Finally, at the start of a week planned stay we heard a bull just before light going crazy and making sure everyone in the area knew he was in charge. Not knowing for sure, where he was we reluctantly went up the opposite side of the mountain in hopes that we could put together a plan on finding him. As the sun started peaking up over the mountains, we began to see herds of 15 or 20 in about every drainage but never could get an eye on the one making all the noise. We finally decided that we had better go back down the mountain and up the other side looking for this noisemaker. Everything seemed to be going great with the wind blowing down the canyon and he was still bugling like crazy. We set up what felt like around 200 yards and let out a few calls and right away, he starts calling back and coming our way. Then the one thing that could mess us up did! The wind changed directions and you could hear a couple of bugles telling every cow in there to follow him out of there. Still we have not been able to see him. We decided to climb up to the top and just see if we could find where he went. With no luck, we took a break for lunch and made a plan to hunt down different drainages in hope that one of us could find him and we knew that we had seen elk in every drainage at first light. Right after we split up I crested over the next ridge south and started hearing bugles again. This time I was able to see a smaller bull hanging out on the very edge of the trees knowing if he went in he would get his butt kicked. However, I still could not see the bull making all the noise. I spent the next hour slowly making my way down the open sagebrush hill to the top of the trees. Started bugling when I reached the top and immediately had 3 bulls bugling and that just made the big one madder. However, I still could not get him to come up to the top of the trees so I decided that I better chance my luck and go further in. Two more times I moved before I finally got him to start moving up the hill and he came up hot. However, because the trees where so thick even at 40 yards I still could not tell what he really looked like. I called him in all the way to 15 yards before I was able to get a shot. As he ran off, I realized my shot was to far back and I only got one lung. By the time my brother finally meet back up with me, it had been around 1 1/2 hours since I shot him. We bumped him about 100 yards from where I first shoot him and could tell I had better do everything I could to stay with him and get another arrow in him. We spent the next 3 hours following him over the next 3 drainages before I was able to get within 50 yards and get another shot in him. He ran anther 100 yards and finally gave up. I know I was lucky to be able to stay with him but I could not have done it without the help of my brother! Thanks Bro! Still don't, know if this was the same bull that we heard at first light but either way, it sure was a great day of hunting. All day, as you can see a couple of the pictures are taking in the dark.
