Just returned from taking my 12 yr old, Garrett on his first big game hunt. He drew a cow elk tag for the Fishlake unit. He has been at my side for the past 12 years and has been there for alot of memorable hunts. He has been there to see Grandpa (2Lumpy) shoot a 300 inch six point bull, one that I tried to talk him out of shooting. Grandpa insisted that extra inches did not replace being able to share the hunt with his two grandsons. Grandpas Paunsy buck last year and Uncle Jordan (Balz) Paunsy buck two years before that. He has seen his brother shoot two 4 point bucks the last couple of years. But his year was his turn! I have never seen a new hunter be so focused for a hunt. Saturday started out great as we were into elk right off the bat. The herd we got on fed out over the top and Garrett passed on a shot, he felt his rest was not good enough to take a shot. We got into another herd on Saturday night, but the wind was just not right and we backed out. After a great dinner at the cabin that night it was time to make a game plan for Sunday morning. Garrett thought the elk would be back in the area that we had seen them Saturday morning and we should be there at daylight. Well at 6:55 AM I could make out several elk back out feeding in the same place as the previous morning (Good call Garrett). We took a different approach and closed the distance. As we closed in I started to range the distance. Garrett quickly pointed out a great spot to set up for the shot. He assured me that he could make the 298 yard shot if the rest was right. Well after connecting on his first two shots his first big game animal was down. I am not sure who was more excited Garrett, Dad, or Grandpa! We finished the hike in and started with pictures. Grandpa made it up a while later and we took a few more! Four hours later and three generations of whipped hunters we got her back to the truck. Great job Garrett you made me proud and thanks Dad for lighting the fire in all of us!!!!!

Thats sweet! I'm sure those memories will never fade! I can only hope that my 12 year will be as successful this year on his cow hunt!

Awesome Muley 73

My 11 year old daughter has no desire to hunt. My 9, 6, and 3 year old boys however cant't wait. My three year old constantly shoots the mounted deer in my house with his nerf dart gun and tells me he got a big one.

Cograts on a great hunt with your boy. I'm still really greatful to your dad for helping me this year with my elk tag. Class act family you've got.
