Idaho Unethical Hunters

So I have grown up in Utah and seen some people do some pretty stupid stuff while hunting, but most of my outta state hunting has been archery and I have never really seen to much negative in the other states I have hunted and honestly part of me thought that it was just a Utah thing.

So last weekend I decided to go try and fill the freezer in Idaho on the late muzzeloader hunt, I hunted the archery season and never conected with a bull but I had a tag and got an invite so I figured what the heck.

Friday night we pulled into the hunting unit about 45 mins before dark and headed up to try and glass a few elk before dark. On the way up the dirt road we were passed by like 5 trucks and wheelers doing mock40. My father in law told me there must be elk out in the fields. Not knowing what he ment by that we drove up onto a hill overlooking a big ag field. As we looked out in it there were about 50 head of elk in the middle. As I glassed the edges of the field there was a guy or two or three on every fence line, and trucks parked at the corners of all the filds. Just then I noticed a truck comming into the field, and the elk started to get nervous. For the next 30 to 40 mins I watched them chase the elk with the truck from one side of the fild to the other, every time they got them close to the fence they would jump out and shoot two or three times, then jump back in the truck and chase them back to the other side. Not to mention everytime they got close enough for the guys on the fence to shoot they did too. I saw at least 3 cows packing legs or gut shot as it got too dark to see and the elk were still running back and forth and the shots still ringing out, not one elk had went down.

Sitting there in shock at what I had just seen and the complete lack of respect for the animals shown by those so called hunters I was very please to see the local game warden had the truck from the field stopped in town, hopefully they got citations not sure how much of what they did was technically illigal and I know its hard to right citations for Unethical behavior but hopefully they got them for harrassing wildlife with a vehicle or somthing.

Sorry for the long post I just needed to vent!

Very sad to hear but unfortunately im sure it happens alot more than we realize. Was their a cow hunt even open?

Wow that makes me sick just to here that story. Those are the kind of people that you would just want to rip there heads off. That gives all who are ethical hunters a bad name.

I hope you said something to the warden

LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-10 AT 11:57AM (MST)[p]I saw a similar episode here in Idaho but the offenders were from a neighboring state. They were flock shooting during a cow hunt, killed at least one spike and left it. We saw other injured animals and found lots of blood trials. We turned the license plate "GTDSL" into IDFG but nothing ever happened. It's sad we have to share with wolves and MORONS.

That is definetely illegal, as harrassment of game animals is against the law and part of harrassment includes using any kind of motorized vehicles to drive them. Additionally it is likely they didn't even have permission to drive in the fields let alone shoot into them. Any wounded animals they did not make a substantial effort to find, would also be a citable offense. Definetely call the tip line now or anytime you see something illegal or even suspicious.

Sounds like you were in the Bear Lake Valley... The Elk don't have a chance in the units surrounding the Valley... Management and Hunting Styles will have to change.

Likely just the farmer family who owned the land with a pocket full of cow tags wanting to fill there freezers too.

If they were not shooting from the truck they likely didn't break any laws. Not to say it was ethical.

50 head of Elk spending the night in there alfalfa might make them a little crazy.
