Just wondered what kind of year it was on some of the other spike units this year. We hunted the southwest desert and went home with 5 for 6 but never seen another spike in any other camp but 1 and they had 13 tags in their camp.

It's funny how last year you were against spike hunting on all le units talking about people killing future big bulls. Now you come on here and post how five out of six tags were filled off the southwest desert spike hunt what a joke!!! Oh I forgot you killed your big bull last year so it don't matter.
 
I hope the spike hunters kill every stinking spike on every stinking unit. Then Utah will have to wake up and manage our elk correctly.

I missed one at 420 yards opening morning, but was able to find and kill the same spike two days later. It was an incredible hunt. I shot him in Strawberry! Didnt see many elk at all in fact I haven't seen a cow all hunt. heading up tonight to try and kill one with my buddy Casey!

I just don't get it with the spike hunts. One, i don't know why they think it does any good and why is UT the only state that does it or am i wrong?
Second, if it is anything like Wisconsin deer doe tags the guys who complain the most about not seeing enough deer are the ones with a pocket full of doe tags. I shake my head and wonder WTF

AARON J, Get over it man you sound like a broken record and for the record i am against the spike hunts on le units and yes i killed one hell of a bull allready on the peaks but that dont mean my wife isnt packing 9 points and my son 2 i want all the bulls dead for the rest of you . my 13 year old son and my wife cant draw a deer tag in this state so we buy spike tags over the counter to get them in the field and some animals under their belt im a dedicated hunter and have been since day 1 i guess i might half to sign them up as well to save a big bull for you so you dont whine !!!!!!!

WOW. The imfamous ocey leavitt speaks out! All i was tryimg to do is get a feel on spike hunting #s on some spike units on this post and by the way i havent been on here for awhile let alone defensive and aaron jumps my arse about being against spike units and i reply. And here you come out of the shadows.

Eric. My bull isnt 400 inches nor have i ever claimed it to be but my door is always open if you want to come put your little tape on it and score him. ps the pros use cable if you must know !

I have to work so I don't have the pleasure to be on here all day and defend myself. All im saying is how can you bash on spike hunters last year than come on here and brag about it. Yes the spikes hunts are good ways to get out and enjoy hunting and you can purchase them over the counter. But im not gonna come on here and talk about how its a bad thing than turn around and do it. Don't worry about leaving me a big bull I dont plan on ever putting in for the sw.

Well thanks for the info, but I'm OK, you would just like to think somebody could post a pic or two. Not just argue. I see plenty of dead elk every year, i would just like to see others success. Isn't that why we all check this website consistently, . To congratulate others on the success. and maybe pick up something use full to use in our own outings.

So me & Rutnbuck are down on the San Juan earlier this Fall!
I decided to set-up & make a call!
I'll give any set at least 30 minutes!
I hike back to the truck,then look way out in the Meadow where I was calling & we see a real PISSCUTTER!
Rut starts laughing at me & harassing me like no other!
Then I knew he was gonna ask:Is that the biggest Bull you can call in on the San juan?
Rut scores this Bull at 40"s,yes 40"s!
Would anybody wanna see the cat call a 40" Bull in?
I doubt it!
Maybe with all the 400" HYPE nobody cares to see a 40" Spike?

OOH So because i didnt take rackman scouting cause he didnt know the unit and i had been working in nevada our schedules conflicted im the bad guy why didnt you take him mr know it farkin all.
 
I was with him on his hunt were he was succesful on two trophys animals in one day. Im not saying your a bad guy for not taking him. I never once claimed to know it all so were ever that came from whatever. All im saying is if your against spike hunting why do you do it?

And i never bashed anyone about killing spikes only said i dissagree with spike hunts on le units having said that im not going to have my wife and kids not hunt spikes if the dwr is going to keep their heads in the sand then we among others are going to kill spikes.Do you boycot mcdonalds for making 1/2 the population morbidly fat. Thats funny and maybe your right, maybe nobody does care to post up some spike pics! I think it's because there all to scared that it might give away there secret spike hunting spot, Haha!
 
Aaron, Dude i love to hunt i also dissagree with the statewide archery and a 28 day season but i hunt it every year and wont stop but after they change it you wont hear me cry. I dont agree with shooting pisscutters THANKS BESSY yes im going to use that and that my friend i can control and dont i wont even let my son shoot them so to answer your question we do it because we can.

I myself would love to get a spike one of these years for I find them PISSCUTTERS a true trophy in there own way. And maybe one day a decent bull if I could ever draw a damn tag in utah.

longshooter is a funny guy a few months back he was bustin my balls about shooting a young coyote in october during a general season elk hunt like i was some unethical A-hole for doing so. but he has no quams about killing yearling spikes and depleting an awesome trophy unit.
 
Aaron, I understand completely and we understand each others passion so even though you also dissagree with spike hunting le units get out and get it done on a spike and learn the units while you do it and good luck on that big bull tag

One of the reasons I have never been successful on spike hunts, is due to the fact every oppurtunity I get I just cant pull the trigger. Maybe one day all just do it and reap the reward of a hard hunt. I have spent countless hours on a many numbers of units in utah but I enjoy horn hunting more thats were my true passion lies.
 
DON LEONARD , I wasnt bashing you for killing some sept pups only saying that even you could call in a pup after the dispersal with your chimpansee call instead of posting pics of adult coyotes killed in the tough parts of the year and state you post pics of dogs that you ran into hunting elk or some roadies.
 
Thanks for killing the coyotes. Who cares if anyone kills an early coyote. Ill kill every pup I find in a den if I find a den. ANY DEAD COYOTE IS A GOOD START!! The fur is worthless. When I kill them ill even just leave them in the field where they lay. Im not going to pack a stinking tick, flea infested mutt back to the truck.

Not to open another can of worms. But... did any of those spikes killed on the sw desert have any arrows in them ?
 
BIG JOHN, No none of the 6 spikes we killed had a mark on them thats all i have been doing is butchering elk and babysitting the pressure cooker!
 
This post pisses me off!!! Bragging about killing yearling elk. Go shoot your spike on an open bull area if you are such a great hunter. Excluding the youth, all spike hunters can go to hell! This is the stupidest hunt in the world. If it's just to kill than go shoot a rabbit or coyote or buy a moo cow and shoot it. 99% of hunting is not killing. Go on a camping trip and look at elk and then shoot some rabbits if you have to kill. I don't care if it's legal or not you don't have to support it. Make a stand! Ask me to take you out spike hunting and see what happens. The DWR sucks!!! Nobody posts pics because they are embarassed too, I would be. Why do people think they have to be a killer to be a great hunter? Need I say more?

If you ever need a guide just call Longshooter, he's like 95.4% success rate for spikes on the peaks.

Cody,the good old days on the Peaks are sadly over.It has been poorly managed the past few years.The dwr needs stop the cow hunts.There is no way this unit is over management objective any more.

So why don't you guys explain why killing spikes is such a bad thing...

Here in Montana we have only one unit that isn't inundatated with wolves yet. That is a draw only area with limited numbers. And you can shoot spikes. It's done nothing but good for our herds.

Some of the biggest bulls in the state come out of this area.

Come on boys I don't feel the love here. :) We all enjoy to hunt and we need to stick together, no matter what choices the DWR makes. We still need to follow their rules. I can't see the LE spike hunts going on forever. But they are here for now. So we have do deal with it. Big government doesn't always make the right choice, we no! But they are trying at least. We need to get involved and help them make the right decision. It is sometimes a long process. Lets hope they don't screw thing up to bad. That the herds can't bounce back
Now I know a few of you guys here and geuinely like you. I hope some of this back talk is just you guys having some fun ?
 
+1 Peakfreak! Longshooter, I don't know what you are talking about our schedules didn't work out? I called you numerous times and never even got a phone call back. That shows alot for your character! I have came to the conclusion that you are a big talker and do not follow through. I spent my time out scouting and ended up getting a good bull. I was hoping that maybe you could point me into a couple of areas that I hadn't been before to help my odds.

If it wasn't for Aaron84, peakfreak and the mossback team it would have taken twice as long to recover and pack out my bull. Anyone who talks bad about them is also talking bad about me! I got to know all of them really well and they are some exceptional guys, I feel honored to be friends with all of them.

Bigracks, Do you know longshooter? If so you would know that this guy came out of the woom fighting! And the last guy he tangled with was carted off in an ambulance with both mandible bones in his jaw shattered and a cracked maxilla,And it was one punch, He couldnt speak a language period. dangerous place to be from the looks of this post, for some reason the smallest bulls always work up the biggest hoo haw. coupla thoughts. What are the other reasonable options that are intelligent in place of spike? I sure cant think of any.....but i'm an idiot and just spent two years on the other side of the world. what do i know. 2nd it doesn't take ethics to kill great animals it takes diligence and time. anyone can do it. 3rd opportunity can kiss my butt. I would rather wait 15 years for one CHANCE at a truly exceptional bull then draw every 5 for a mediocre one. Just me. Personally I love the spike hunts, i think that they are not the brightest thing in the world but i don't claim to be either so we are in the same club. They offer me a chance to fill a freezer and enjoy quality time with my family. they offer a challenge and the only trick the dnr has to worry about is the number of tags. Now don't quote me on this but i was under the impression that less than 10% of the hunters actually fill a tag. Factor in other kill such as poor shots and lost elk and i think that it is safe to say 15% kill percent. That may be way off just something i have heard. if that were the case a herd of 5000 with a 10/100 bull ratio would have 500 bulls available to hunt. spreading that out between age groups i reckon it would be safe to say 75 spikes to hunt. now if the dnr issues 200 tags and only 15% fill hmmmmm that would mean that roughly 30 bulls get killed and 45 move on to grow. A couple of reasons why i throw this out there and I put a huge disclaimer on it, i don't know a whole lot bout this hunting thing i'm kind of an amatuer. hehe it would make a lot of sense to do that, in order to manage a herd and bring a bit of money in. why wouldnt ya. I can think of some truly great units that have gotten exponentially better post spike hunt. the Wasatch is one of them. Pre spike a 350 bull was folk lore post spike that is the average bull that we have killed the last few years with hunters. I can deal with that...........hehe i dunno if this is gonna make much sense and it is probably unintelligent jibberish but oh well. i kinda missed this place so thought i'd throw somethin out there.
