Elk Ivory

My wife shot her first elk this last week, and I am looking for some interesting ideas for the ivories. If any of you have any good ideas I'd love to hear them.

Thanks

I got some really nice ivories from my first bull I took this year, but I had a terrible time getting them out of his head. I used a knife and cut down both sides, then I tried to pry them out with my hands. No go. I grabbed a pair of pliers and got a good grip and tried prying, twisting, yanking them out. I ended up messing them up pretty bad with lots of deep scratches and gouges. My son ended up getting them out for me, but I'm not sure what to do with them now. I think I can sand the scratches smooth, then re-polish them, but the color will be gone. Maybe I can soak them in strong tea, then polish them to bring the color back. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking about making a special obsidian blade knife, and inlaying these into the carved Elk antler handle somehow. That's only if I can get them looking good again.

Being a dentist let me tell you how to get them out really quick and without putting a single scratch on them. (I DO NOT DO THIS WITH MY PATIENTS, JUST SO YOU KNOW). Tilt his head up vertical with mouth facing up. Put a short piece of 2x4 on the front of the ivory and smack the other end with a hammer. They will shoot out of their socket and not a scratch on them.

I knew there had to be an easier way. If I ever get another chance, I'll try to remember that trick.

Are there any other ideas on putting the color back into these ivories after they've been sanded smooth and polished?

Maybe I could just buy another pair on eBay for $40 and pretend they came from my bull.

Sure Marley, Just like you say this wont hurt a bit!

The only reason I don't use this technique on human patients is because it's too hard to sterilize a 2x4.

Cut the end of the nose off with a saws-all just behind the ivories. Boil that little section for ten minutes and they will FALL out without risking breaking the root off.....
I will get a pic of the earings I had made for my mom with her first elk posted up for you.. they look really good and she wears them everywhere....

seems a messy and labor intensive process. Never spent more than 5 minutes getting ivories out cleanly in the field. Trick is to pry from the top of the root. When in a hurry I smack the back of my knife while to point is pushed into the top of root. One good pry after that and it is out...Sometimes I slice some of the gum away from the outside surface of the tooth and upper jawbone but totally necessary.

This method on YouTube looked pretty staight forward. I boiled my skull from this years elk an the ivories came out as part of the process.

Marley, I used this just the other day worked great thanks

Glad it worked out for you. Happy to help. It takes a whole 5 seconds using the 2X4 method.

The 2x4 thing is just funny as hell. The easy way is to cut on all sides then they come right out, takes about two minutes total.

voice of warning here though that I forgot to mention. Do not hit the tooth sideways. It will bust it off. Make sure you put the 2x4 on the side closest to the front of the mouth.

My taxidermist showed me this trick years ago. There is NO better way! They come out instantly & don't need any clean up. Cutting & boiling is a severe waste of time. Nothing works better or quicker than a good 'ol 2x4 & hammer, or when on the side of the mountain, a sturdy branch & rock.

To polish them i just try to get any stuff off the teeth i can then throw them in a pair of jeans and they come out looking pretty shiny. Ive also heared letting them sit in a can of copenhagen stains them a beautiful color.
