Well heres the story: About 2weeks before the hunt opened my hunting partner called and informed me he wasnt goin to be able to make the hunt this year due to a recent divorce. So i made a few calls to other friends and some family members but to no avail. Opening day came and I had just the one day to hunt before having to go back to work. So I chose an area that was familiar to me having hunted this area previously in years past. I arrived in the area only to notice I had deer moving everywhere in the pre dawn darkness. As I shut down my vehicle I noticed a herd of 20 deer moving across the road in front of me I decided to let them move on before exiting and heading off to my area. after a 45 minute wait first light was upon me and I was getting a late start into my area. I arrived in my area about 700 am once i got situated I noticed 3 does and 2 bucks feeding right towards me and where they would come out was 20 yards to my right. Now these deer were about 200-300 yards away and we all know how long it takes them to feed. So I sat down my bow and was just admiring the surroundings when I caught movement to my right. I noticed 3 does and right behind them was a buck making his way towards the does. I slowly reached down and knocked an arrow and brought the bow up ever so slowly without looking at the bow i was trying to get my release on and come to full draw this was a problem because I had to move to get the release ready. As I came to full draw the buck started walking towards my location. 15 yards,10 yards, 7 yards My heart is just a thumping with anticipation the buck turns and is slightly quartering away I settled the 20 yard pin high on his vitals and released. Just as I released the buck took a step forward and all hell broke loose I had does blowing snot everywhere when I heard the deer start blowing snot I thought I had missed the thoughts goin thru my mind were how could i screw up an easy shot like that? I relaxed enough to go check where the buck was standing only to see that the sage brush was painted red with his blood. I waited for 30 minutes before tracking him only to find him piled up 75 yards away in an irrigation ditch. it was barely 8 am when I shot him and was around 9 am when I recovered him opening day. I went back to where I was sitting and ranged the shot at 7 yards. This was by far a hunt I will never forget.
