This morning I watched some really nice bulls bed down and am leaving now to go get one. Aside from some dope screwing it up this should be a no brainer. Big bulls too. They were too far away to really tell with the 30x spotting scope so I am just going by body size. I'll send pics if successfull if you're good.:)

Did it.

Sat for 10 minutes when a group of small bulls stepped out. The bigger bulls stayed in the trees and I had to shoot because I was running out of daylight. Shot a sub 300" 6 point at 300 yards. Too dark for pics but I will post some non-field photos later. Nothing special but I did have high hopes. Maybe next year. Fun hunt.

Steaks tonight.

What hunt are you doing?? For some reason I thought you were doing an extended archery hunt but at 300 yards, unless you are using exploding tips, I don't think you were using a bow. What state, hunt??

Montana OTC general season.


I've been practicing my 303 yard exploding tip in a 30 mph crosswind after legal shooting light into a herd of elk ass shot. Practice paid off.

I set the video camera up and let it roll and then got into shooting position to the left so it did look like I hit it too far back but the bullet angled into the vitals just like the book says. One shot kill with the .340 Weatherby. Yay!

I have the video which turned out great but it looks like a gut shot even though his lungs were blown out and yes there was other collateral damage. He took a few steps and tipped over behind some trees so no ground shaking fall. I had to cross a draw which took another 30 minutes and only had my Curve II which doesn't have flash. My headlamp didn't cut it. I'll post the video tonight but try to be productive at work today anyway. I feel your excitement.

Remember when I said I saw big bodies on the original post? Do people really think that bigger bodies don't mean bigger antlers??? Really??? Even after pearman told us he shoots 400" elk with 175 lb hind quarters??? How contradicting is that?

A few years ago I filled my elk tag during archery season with a 322" bull and went back during rifle season to scout some more and saw a 350" bull. This seems to be the norm but on the brighter side, I will possibly find his sheds and hope for him next year. They seem so elusive until you don't have a tag in your pocket. Video is finalizing now.

I have to cross a river, crawl over deadfall and scurry up a nasty face to get to this area which is why it isn't far in distance but sucks to get to which separates the men from you boys. Some dope posted this area in a hunting magazine recently as if he discovered it. I had to stash the head and still haven't retrieved it but will post a back of the truck pic tonight...maybe.
 
Nice shot Zigga. The other bull started feeding after the shot because they're not used to being shot at in the dark.

I'm glad the bull you shot didn't like, roll down the hill. That would have been highly unethical.

ZIGGA....I dont know what you have done to these other guys to have blast you like this, but it looks like you have a good area and I hope it continues for you. Its not easy to kill a 300 inch bull in an open unit in mt I know that. So congrats, and atleast that big boy gives you something to shoot for next year.

Actually I haven't gut it out yet either. Still taking pics. :)

I have the head at a secure location don't worry. Meat first, then head. My wife and neighbors would freak if I brought that stinkin head home but I promise to get some worthwhile pics and soon. It's snowing like crazy here so it will look a little sketchy.

Last week the snow was 2 feet deep and I didn't see the need to get soaking wet for something that isn't going anywhere. Send this off to the forensic scientists to see if it is indeed the same bull. It's small but it was a fun hunt. I also found a ton of sheds getting in there. Yay!

Is this guy for real or what? Improbable that 2'of snow melted in less than a week in the mountains and he's claiming he waited 7 months to go up and get that head! I call BS whether it's true or not for going this long without a picture! Why wasn't a picture taken the next day after the kill when all the meat was being hauled out? I'm sure there will be some good answers for all these questions that you've created by your OP, if you even try. It may take until next season to come up with some answers though, just like it took this look for the picture, LOL!

I did deserve it topgun. I should strictly road hunt and I wouldn't have these problems. Within 24hrs of the shot there was a shatload of snow which was the reason for working on it in the dark knowing I wouldn't want to come back. Not to mention griz and loads of black bears.
