Wanted to get your thoughts on Shawn Labrum (Wild mountain Outfitters).

Anybody ever used his services before?

I'm just doing my homework...I've been burned before!

Thanks

I hunted the bookcliffs last year and he was camped right near my favorite water hole. All of his archery hunters had already taken deer, so he let me in on a secret spot. Actually saw him on the road pulling out a big elk with another hunter. He is excellent, and knows the bookcliffs in and out. He only hunts the roaded area tho. What tag do you have?

I haven't hunted with him. But I do know that he is a stand-up guy, he has help friends of mine out and wouldn't take a dime for his troubles. He even pointed them to a good deer on a hunt a few years ago. If I was hiring a Guide he would be the type I would hire.

I've known Shawn for nearly 20 years. I've hunted the same areas as him several times, but never with him. He guides full time, and has paid his dues. He runs a good camp, and his hunters usually do well. They've killed some good bucks and bulls the last few years (as well as sheep, goats and lions). He's not just a guide, he's a hunter.

I appreciate the help. We hunted with a guide in Wyoming a few years ago and had a terrible experience...so this year I'm definately doing my homework!

Drew a rifle deer tag and am super excited.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-25-06 AT 03:17PM (MST)[p]You dont need a guide to hunt the book cliffs had a friend that went over to the books for an Archery deer hunt we drew him a map on where to hunt he didnt have alot of time he shot a nice 4 point in the first two hours of the hunt.

My dad hunted it 2 years ago and ran into him down there on the hunt. My old man is kind of a hard one to impress but he had nothing but good things to say about his outfit. You can for sure do it on your own but if money is not the issue i would not even think twice about not paying for his service. My old man has taken alot of big bucks and he does most of it on his own but he even said the guy produced some of the best heads out of the unit. Here is his 28 inch mid 190s buck from 04

To be clear, I'm not looking for a guided hunt but want some info from a good source for a do it yourself hunt...the book cliffs is a huge unit and I don't have enough time to scout it properly...it sounds like this guy is pretty reputable.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-27-06 AT 11:37PM (MST)[p]Hey Blackpowder, my brother drew a tag several years ago on the Book Cliffs. Most of the hunters, hunt the road areas and he said that he seen a lot of 24-25 inch bucks. My brother also hunted the roadless area where you have to hike in a couple of miles. If you are looking for a big buck try the roadless areas. We seen some good bucks.

You don't need an outfitter for hunting deer in the Book Cliffs. Should not be too hard to see lots of bucks. Save your money.

Blackpowder:

I saw your post and thought I would respond. I have hunted the book cliffs since I was a kid with my dad back in the early sixties. In all modesty, I know the area and deer migration patterns very well based upon many years of experience. I usually only guide family members who draw a tag, which has been every year since the area reopened. However, nobody in our extended family drew this year, but my dad, brothers and I will be out there again this year so we can get a good handle on what kind of shape the herd is in. I'll be happy to help you out this year if you are interested, and I won't charge you anything. Let me know if you are interested by emailing me soon.

If you are interested in seeing pictures of recent bucks we have harvested over the past few years...just let me know. If you already have another guide or are not interested, good luck and enjoy your hunt!
