Wounded elk in Parleys

I hit a six point elk at 9:00 am in Parleys near the summit, The shot was 40 yards quartering away and I hit a little back I thought with the angle that it would be good. It wasn't a pass through. After the hit it took off down canyon and was spraying blood out his right side. I saw where he crossed the ridge so we gave him some time and then started on the blood. The blood was good and we ended up following the trail for maybe a mile and found where he bedded and it was a pool of blood. We ended up following him for another four or five miles with constant blood. He ended up going into a big pine canyon down from the summit and crossing over into Lambs Canyon and continuing up Lambs. I spent all day Saturday up there and went up again today until dark but the snow was getting heavy and covering the blood and tracks until I couldn't see either anymore. The last blood I found was one or two draws down from the gate in Lambs. So now I'm going to try to go and to cover the areas he was heading but I thought I would try to get the word out. If you or anybody you know encounters a 260-300 inch six point hit in the right side probably a little back in these areas I described please let me know. Thanks

You should have stopped after a half mile after you shot him. 4-5 miles with constant blood, if you backed off and came in later you may have found him after a mile or so. IMO...If you haven't found him within that range then the shot didn't do much to put him down fast. Would have been better to back off and give him some time to expire. I have made the same mistake several times early on in my hunting career and have learned that if the animal has not been found after a few hundred yards or so and there is good sign just to back off and come in later. He will die and will be a much quicker pack out than chasing him all over the mountain.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-15-10 AT 02:57PM (MST)[p]I'm still trying to figure out where you hit that elk. The summit is only two miles from the bottom of Lambs. I hope you find him.

I would have stopped except the snow coming down limited my time and the other hunters that started on his blood trail. I had to pretty much run over the ridge and stop them from pushing him immediately.

He was hit right below the summit and went west almost to Lambs and then up to the top of the ridge between the canyons and then zig zagged up and down back up to almost the top of Parleys and then crossed over into Lambs and continued up Lambs.
When I was up there yesterday the tracks and little blood I could find was covered in snow from the previous day so it was hard to find much.

I'm hoping to get up there in the next day or two. I'll keep my eyes open. Good luck.

+1 on the back out and wait if you can. It's amazaing what a little time to calm down and get stiff will do in helping you get the animal.

Sooo... have you found him yet?? Please follow up with us.

I have been back up and went over the areas surrounding where I last had any sign of him. Nothing yet I am going back up tomorrow morning to look some more, I have been hoping that I might see some crows or ravens on the carcass but no luck.
