Utah Deer Proposal

Here are a bunch of bucks from Utah County, Utah on Friday of last week. These bucks are representative of many that I see in out of the way places along the Wasatch front....great genetics! I propose that either the Utah DWR make the Wasatch front (I-80 to Nephi) part of the extended archery hunt or make it a limited entry unit. This would allow the bucks to get a few years under their belts and we would see more GREAT deer killed in Utah. What do you think? Wouldn't you give up shooting a two point for a couple of years to have a shot at something like this?

I don't see any pics. I also think that it is a mistake to make everyone a trophy hunter.

I agree though, I think the boundries are just fine where they are at. Besides, its nice to know that there are general season areas that can and do produce some nice deer each year. Its nice to think that I might be able to score a "trophy" buck without it being on a LE Unit.

Well, for one... why take away ANOTHER place to hunt? Two, eventualy they will want it "bow only". I am pretty damn sick of seeing hundreds of Bulls on LE units in Utah and watching them give 20 tags for them. This "purposal" is just another "lets make it a trophy unit" and only let bow hunters or people who draw hunt it. I have my own issues with the SLC unit. I personally think they should have a muzzle loader hunt on it. I am not alone in that oppinion either. I swear I will blow a fuse if I hear one more person come on here and try to take away ANOTHER place to hunt by purposing to make it a "trophy" unit.

I agree! SOme good bucks are taken every year on the section of the front that allow muzz/rifle hunts. Why would you want to take that away? Ive always thought they should have some tags for LE on the archery only section. Maybe give 10 rifle tags and 20 muzz tags, or something along those lines.

I know...we've discussed this before and I totally agree with you. I also think a muzzleloader hunt on the front would be AWESOME....however, it should be somewhat limited as to the number of tags for the muzzleloader hunt.

Actually I think that there should be a rifle hunt on the Wasatch Front, but that there should only be 1 tag allowed, and that tag should go to ME each and every year!!

I like the idea of having some muzzleloader permits for the Wasatch archery area. I loved hunting it in 1999 with a muzzleloader. It will take a strong and well thought out proposal to get it changed back again, also backed by Don Peay and company. For those who keep bitching and moaning about how bad the Utah deer heards are, they're not really that bad. Just last weekend, in the Central region and on public land not far off the roads. I saw over 30 bucks in about two hours, half of them were 3 point or better. I am looking very forward to this years hunt.

supporting this idea in any way shape or form. BOWHUNTERS NEED TO COME TO THE REALIZATION PRETTY FREAKING FAST AS TO EXACTLY WHAT THEIR PURPOSE IS ON THE WASATCH FRONT IS.

We are a management tool PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!! If we don't start taking a few deer off of this hunt the DWR will get them off in one way or another. For those that want to hunt this unit with things that go bang keep in mind north of I-80 this is totally legal.

As far as more EXCLUSIONARY HORN PORN AREA'S I am pretty sure we have all had our fill of this BULL*^!%.

I liked it when the Biologist for the area pretty much brushed off bowhunters as being a management tool for the Front. He said the deer population does not fluctuate much because most of the kill is by cars. He said that from a deer management perspective it didn't matter one way or the other if the archery hunt stayed or if it went away. Pretty good words, but hard for the bowhunters to swallow.

Pack that is my point. In discussions with the CO's in this area we have hit the point where some form of hunting is going to get r done. I would rather it be bowhunters but the point remains some deer need to be taken this year.

I have a meeting with the DWR to go over this very thing next week. I'll fill you in on how it goes.

Luckyone, If you are trying to pass these off as public land mulies in Utah County....you might want to try to use pics of less recognizable deer!! LOL!! These are pics of the bucks that frequent a nice piece of private land in SL COunty.....I should know, I watch them on an almost daily basis!!! RFLMAO!!

Same genetics and same issue...if you have spent any serious time watching deer (public or private land) along the Wasatch Front you know this already. The point I was hoping to get feed back on is whether anyone would favor an expansion of the Wasatch extended archery hunt or making a limited entry hunt so that more of the deer would have enough birthdays to reach their genetic potential. I am personally in favor of fewer opportunities to hunt if the trophy potential is improved.
