How many shoot a 270?

Ive shot 6 elk now with a 270 and have never had a problem with it. 140 grain nosler accubond always did the trick... that was until I fell in love with the 300 RUM

I use to, and still would not hesitate if need be, but now I carry my 300 win. Just a little insurance for the big animals, and often hard to get tags. I still use my old trusty 270 for everything else.

A 270 loaded with 130gr Nosler Partitions has been pretty deadly for my family. 5 elk in 3 years have fallen to this.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-17-10 AT 12:06PM (MST)[p]I use a 270 with 150 gr whatever is cheapest to shoot. Gets the job done. That was the gun of choice back in the day before the 30-06 came over from the military. I would almost guess there has been more elk killed with a 270 than any other gun.

Found a 270 bullet inside the hide of the shoulder of my Pahvant bull, but it didn't put him down. He also took 3 shots from my 300 Mag before he was out for the count. I agree shot placement is critical, but these critters are tough! I prefer shot placement AND fire power.

I shot a 270 until 2 years ago, no real reason for changing other than falling into the mag craze. I shoot a 300 win now. I've taken a few elk and lots of deer with my 270 and have seen lots more fall to them! Great all around flat shooting caliber!

I used to hunt everything with my 270...took many deer, elk, and a bison with it, but have since moved up to bigger guns, mainly cuz I won them and figured that I should use them! lol...

I've seen a couple of elk fall to the 150 grain core lokt and a couple to the 150 grain power point. Between the two I would recomend the power point cuz it's pointed and has better down range ballistics. I've killed an elk shooting 150 grain core lokt. It killed the elk dut I would recomend a tougher bullet. Accu, part, XP3, etc.

.270 w/130 gr for exactly 39 years now. Dall sheep, Mt caribou, Shiris moose, black bear, a grundle of deer, elk & antelope. a truck load of coyotes topped with probably a dozen red fox, a horse trailer full of jackrabbits, a two deer chasing bird dogs(not mine)a bunch of grouse and a handfull of vaporized magpies. Are there better calibers? yes. but I'm keep my .270.

Shot two elk both under 150yds. and both one shot kills with my .270 150gr. partition. Went to the 300WSM and loved it and then to the 338RUM which is my favorite. Mostly because I love guns, but i wouldn't shoot a big bull over 250-300yds with a 270. Sad to say my .270 has been in the safe for 13 yrs.

I always shot the 130 grain winchester power point. Love those bullets, they are cheap to buy so I don't mind shooting them at coyotes while hunting. I've never had much of a track job if any. None went over 50 yards including a mature bull at 350 yards on a open bull unit.

I chose the 300 win mag because the trajectory on a 130 grain out of a 270 is the exact same as a 180 out of the 300, with quite a bit more thump when it gets there!

My dad shot a 270 for 30+ years and took a lot of elk with it. Most bulls took a few bullets to stop, but it did a fairly good job. It is a good caliber and will kill an elk.

However, he did wound two big bulls he shot at through out the years. Both were 300-400 yard shots. Luckily, both bulls ran a long ways and other hunters were able to harvest them. Yes, we followed the blood, heard the shots and saw the downed game. Needless to say, the other hunters earned the right to the elk. I guess that is one benefit of any bull units in Utah. Looking back, the shots were probably too long for a 270

After the second wounded bull, we both upgraded to 338 win mags. We still use 270s for deer and other animals and we really like the round, just not for elk or larger animals. Something about using one bullet that stops elk in their tracks immediately...

Have shot 3 cows. would recomend premium bullets though. The cheap factory loads- corlokt, powerpoints don't work as well as the barnes, partition, xp3 were you want max penetration. The others work great on deer, Don't plan on shooting a bull though, that's for a bow and arrow!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-10 AT 02:16PM (MST)[p]Killed an elk with a 270 wsm and a 7mm but now I have a .338 mag

LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-10 AT 02:33PM (MST)[p]I believe the .270 win is a great deer rifle, but consider it to be the bare minimum for elk.

Shot placement is always the most important key, but if you go this route I'd strongly suggest you always use premium bullets when hunting larger game like elk.

The only reason I see to buy a 270 for elk hunting is that you either have a great deal on a used one, or are concerned with recoil (however there are still better options available if concerned with the later).

My current favorite cartridge for elk medicine is the .300 WSM with the XP3, E-tip, or Barnes bullets. Recoil is less than a 7mm Rem Mag, but tragectory is similar...with a heavier 180 grain bullet.

Used to have one. I really liked it. However, I went to a 300 Win Mag and will never ever go back. No comparison IMO.

270 is still a good gun.

I've never even shot a 270, but have always wanted one. With that said, I don't know what I'd do with it - my 300 win mag has earned a permanent place along side me on any big game hunt.
