Question: What publication or service do you use to research hunts? I've been using Huntin Fool for six years to start and then researching thru maps, biologists, Monster Muleys, etc. Wondering if I should be looking at something else for a cross reference....

Thanks NS

Hunting forums are a great resource, especially the PM function......Just remember that every hint and tip in those hunting rags is being read by THOUSANDS of other dudes. I think that connecting one on one with people who know the areas is still the way to go. Google earth and DWR field officers are also good resources. I just am not sure about following advice that is being sold to THOUSANDS of other sportsmen.

Agreed. I spoke to Jason Carter last year, had max non-resident points accrued in Wyoming, and I start asking questions about the hunts listed in the magazine and he begins telling me about a hunt that isn't even listed would be his suggestion. Kind of confused me. I still have max points for both deer and elk, but I'm really not sure what to put in for. Thus the reason to start looking for cross references.

Thanks NS

I look at each state's information. You can find draw odds, with and without points, success rates, % of mature bulls, cows, etc; public land access, the whole nine yards. A quick glance through the available information, and its not hard to find out which areas are listed heavily in the magazines.

I am one that believes that every LE unit has quality animals, with a few exceptions. Its just a matter of how hard the hunter wants to work for the animal, and the hunter hunting the way he wants to hunt. Who cares if you have a shot at a 350 bull when you have to deal with a 15 miles round trip pack for one load, if you are not fully prepared for that. Maybe a 320 bull would suffice, and would be a hunt that could be enjoyed much easier?

Find the unit that will allow you to hunt the way you want, has decent success, and reasonable odds, and apply.

Every unit I have ever hunted was the result of my boots except for one. The one that wasn't was when I drew SSDM in UT from the expo.

I hate asking for spots to check out, I feel like I am depending on someone else to do my work for me then. That is just not me.
If someone or a book tells you to go to spot "x", how do you know how many people before or after you have seen/heard the same information. If someone tells me to go to a spot, I avoid it, because I don't like being part of the circus.
