Yes. I hunted there last year. I also backpacked in the area a couple of times. Actually there a lot of deer. I've spoken with F&G (biologist) several times this year. The story of how to find them is an old one: get off the road (at least two miles and 5 is better) and get high. A huge "ridge" runs through the heart of the unit. It's made up of Gunsight Peak, Sheep Mtn. Steel Mtn., Ross Peak. According to the biologist, he has a LOT of bleeps on his radio tracking devices from that "ridge".
He says you cannot get too high; he's amazed at how often he looks down and sees only rocks (above timber) when he is flying to check on the radio collars.
Flying....that gives a hint. This is big and rough country. It's a lot of work. I have llamas and did well (there are folks who accuse me of fanaticism), because I got away from the roads and the motorcycle trails.
If you want a specific....try 2.5 to 3 miles west of Skillern Hot Springs. Get to the top of the mountain. There are deer, elk and bears there (actually that's true for a lot of places). The best aspect of the specific area is that it seems to be too far for most walkers and there are no motorcyle trails there.
Good luck
