Whats up with deformed deer this year?

We have a spike on our property thats got a goofed up horn. Neighbors have a nice 3pt with one side seriously goofed up (its a blob hanging down its head with 5 or 6 pts sticking out of it) plus I got a trailcam pict of a elk that is the same way. Thats all in one single 1 mile radius area.

I've seen several more like this in different areas this year... much more than normal.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-30-06 AT 11:09AM (MST)[p]So what type of injury do you think this young buck had to result in this strange configuration?

IS it an injury? Like I said I'm seeing alot of deer and elk this way this year ... it seems like an awful lot of accidents going on.

A non-typical Nomad buck! Much more exciting than last year!

Big decision for Bobcatbess this year! Can he let it walk?????

Thanks MOUNTAIN_HUNTER! You're the MAN!

BAG EM',TAG EM', AND DRAG EM'!!

I killed a blacktail near Lake Almanor a couple years ago almost identical to that one. The one I killed had a little wider horn that partially covered his right eye. My hunting buddies saw him while scouting and named him paddlehead, because it looked like a ping-pong paddle. on the 4th day I asked one of the guys if he had seen paddle-head? He said "not since it opened" About 30 minutes later I stuck a forkie. When we got to him I only saw one horn. So I lifted his head.......And there it was....paddle-head!!! we couldn't believe it.

I dropped a blacktail here in Alaska like that too. Funny incident. It was a long rainy day - something like 1" fell that day. We had hunted hard all day and were heading back to the beach. I saw a deer that had horns, so I dropped it. I walked up to it and saw no horns!! (does are legal.) The upright spike was against the ground and buried in the moss. The droptine spike was buried in the hide behind the ear. It was the deer I shot at, but not a good feeling when you're shooting at a buck and think you killed a doe.

The theory I had heard, was that if a deer/elk is injured on their body somehwere, that side of the antler configuration will have oddities. How true that is, I don't know, but seems like a reasonable explanation.

"Every man dies...not every man really lives."

That happens alot of times when a buck or bull is in velvet and still nursing its mother, the antler will get pushed down while they ar eunder mama getting some milk. We have seen a herd of cow elk with their yearling bulls anbd each of them had one bent down horn.

Man it must be something in the water where you hunt ha ha. I saw the post on your elk with a dropper. You are realy getting some cool pictures. Hope to see you with your hands on one soon.
