Lets hear your thoughts on the hunts in general and in particular 1/2b/2c, 23 and 27.

I have 9 points NR and I am looking for a gun/muzzeloader hunt.

Give me general info about the above hunts. I prefer rugid, high terrain and backpacking in a couple miles.

Thanks DonV

After you pick a unit you might see if you can tag along with a tag holder before you draw so you can learn the unit. AZ will be a one and done hunt for me so that's what I'm going to do.

Assuming you are a non-res, I'd recommend the late 27 hunt. You can pack into the blue and get away from most people, it is rough, and there are some bigguns in there.

You have enough points that you may consider waiting for a better tag. Yes some big bulls come off the late hunts, but it is a much tougher hunt. Az country isn't the easiest country to hunt on a late hunt, not like Utah. Very thick and rugged. Without someone who really knows the unit or a guide your wasting your points. Go for an archery unit. You are only 3 years a way from an awesome archery hunt.

I am in a constant toss up in AZ, late rifle is about the same odds as early bow. I would rather bowhunt, but to me elk hunting is cold and high country, which most of AZ is not. Later hunts might give me the cooler weather I love. 60's for the high is about perfect for me.

I am only a few years away from 27 early bow, I could draw 8 early bow elk this year and I am also close to 10 early bow.

Late rifle fits my schedule great and I fee I could allocate less time to get the job done then a bowhunt, freeing me up for other hunts.

I want a hunt that is NOT hot, rugid and remote for packing in and has a good elk population with a chance at a whopper. I also like terrain that is at least somewhat glassable. I do not want to sit water (but I am not opposed to it for a change of pace). Feel free to offer me some ideas.

If I sound wishy washy that is because I am.

Bob no chance I am tagging along on a hunt, I would rather be hunting, if I make a mistake with my unit choice that is ok.

One/two items to add to your list as you go thru your options and then a decision --------would be that the later the dates of a hunt----the more broken horn you most probably will encounter.

The other is your 2nd choice option.........I have had great luck on my 2nd choice drawing it -----as others, I am sure, have too.
Maybe do one rifle the 2nd bow or visa-a-versa?

Exciting to be planning for January Wyo and Az elk appl.!

Well if you would rather bowhunt and the late seasons fit your schedule better, look at the late archery hunts in November. Only 25 tags and fairly easy to draw. I helped a friend from Alaska on one this year and we had a great time. Passed a lot of bulls and saw a lot of elk. Just something to ponder.

I'd wait and do archery. You can draw a late rifle tag with 0 points in almost every unit even as a NR. Why only come to AZ once?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-10 AT 11:14AM (MST)[p]Robb, Don, a big Howdee from San Diego!!! Hey, I got 8 elk pts. I'm right behind you Don. I also, got 11 or 12 for deer. Man time flys w/ little kids!!! I don't want to hijack. So, I'll start another thread. Bill

I think 9 points is past the point where you get more selective on your applications. Sure, late rifle as a second choice makes sense till you get up to the max points sure draw point...but once you pass that, go big or nothing...The late rifle hunt is fun, and maybe two late rifle hunts are better than one archery hunt...but 9 points is just too many...Me thinks:)

I would not burn 9 points on a late hunt, either rifle or bow. I've got 13 points going into this year, and I'm only putting in for one specific unit until I draw it for an archery or muzzleloader hunt. After that, I can draw late rifle hunts probably every 3-5 years. depending on the unit.

Arizona late rifle tags in unit 1 & 27 are great hunts. If you like to pack in 27 is the best. Real tough country but some great elk.
