Well looks like I've taken it down to the wire. I've hunted pretty hard from the high country near Graham to the sagebrush hills off blacks creek road. I have seen several small bucks, but nothing I want to hang my tag on (yet). Anyone have any suggestions? I know unit 39 is a general area in October so I'm not asking for anyones secret spot, just a shove in the right direction. You can send me a P.M. I am going to give it one last go next week from Wednesday to Saturday. Not looking to break any records, but would like to get in an area where I might harvest something larger than a forky! I am hunting on foot and physically able to hike "almost" anywhere. Thanks for any help someone out there my be able to give me.

I have the same tag, I havent seen anything since the first couple days of the season. I have also hunted from down in the Sagebrush to the cliffs of House Mt, Lava Mt, and Krall Mt.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-19-06 AT 11:20PM (MST)[p]I have seen a couple nice bucks just north of lava mt. while out bugling this last weekend.

The high country between Queens and Little Queens Rivers up to Blacknose Mountain. My buddy had the tag and hunted all over with the same results. He got a lead on going up into the Queens country and killed a nice 25" buck.

There are nice bucks all over that country...get up high and hit the timber pockets...Helped a buddy find a 30" 9x7 190" gross buck last weekend...hunted hard and it was the only shooter that we seen...and he has been out every chance he has had...his cousin also shot a 25 or 26" 7x4 a couple weekends ago in full velvet.
so the bucks are there...you just gotta hunt the steep stuff...the cooler weather helps a little too...keeps them out feeding a little longer

Thanks for the input guys, I think I will try my luck up Devils Cr. It's just north of Lava Mt.

Thanks alot guys for all your info. Got me energized again. I took a friend out this morning that also had this tag and he shot his first ever Mule Deer buck. It was a 3x2 and he was very happy. I'm going to head back out tomorrow until Saturday night.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

Youngbuck I sent you a P.M.

Forget Devils Creek, i was in there this past friday and saturday and didn't see a deer. Put the time and effort elsewhere. I'm not trying to stear you away from my secret spot or anything, just trying to help you out by telling you what i didn't see. I would take the gentleman's advice about queens and queens river. I went up the sheep creek trail and took devils creek trail to the top of rattlesnake mtn. Not a deer in sight for two day's.

What the crap, where are all the deer then. I hunted up the backside of House Mt today and all I saw were 6 Doe, and bear tracks. There's usually some good bucks on House Mt and up Devils Cr way. Have any of you guys hunted Steele Mt?

we hunted up steele saturday...same thing does and bears...sow and 3 cubs and about 10 does and fawns....rattlesnake usually has good bucks...just like everywhere else tho...you gotta hunt hard to find what you are looking for...they are there

Have you tried swamholm at all. I have some buddies that were up in there last weekend and saw several bucks. I guess one was a real whopper.

Good luck,

Kicker

we hit swamholm saturday first off...seen a 3 point and 2 does...also seen a 5 point bull with a cow and calf.
My buddy had hunted it a couple weeks before and said he seen tons of sign all over the place...but when we went in there was no fresh sign after the snow.
I am gonna give 39 a shot during the general season...we have a spot picked out that might hold some good bucks...way off the beatn path...hopefully it pans out

Back when I had this tag, I spent 5 days looking in the high mountains just to come down to about 3500 ft. and kill a decent 3X4 in the low country. So, don't over look good habitat at lower elevations.
The two bucks I finally found did not get up from their beds until well after sunset and mine had his stomach stuffed full of Choke Cherries.
