Snow in the Book Cliffs?

Just wondering if there was any snow out in the Book Cliffs this past weekend? If so will this start the migration early?

I was near the west boarder of the Books yesterday, except for the occasional dusting in shaded areas, there was no snow on the ground. I hunted this unit last year, despite the warm and dry conditions, the deer were migrating to lower elevations. We tried hunting on top and seen very few deer.

Maybe no snow, but it sure hailed like all get-out in Green River last Friday afternoon, I can tell ya that for sure, got the bruised melon to prove it :)

Thanks for the reply - Did you have any success last year? Have you spent much time in the southern part of the book cliffs? I am headed out there this weekend to look around a bit for the upcoming rifle hunt. Everybody I talk to also says to spend more time in the lowlands rather than up high. Any general areas you would suggest I consider?

LAST EDITED ON Sep-18-06 AT 10:46PM (MST)[p]Was out to Cisco Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hunting antelope with my cousin and it rained, hailed, and the wind blew like I've never seen before. Not sure how the tents managed to stay up, but they did. I didn't notice any snow in the high country until coming up Sp. Fork Canyon on the way home and then there was snow way up high on Nebo.

We came through Soldier Summit about noon Sunday and it must've been colder than hell there because one of the lawns had a sprinkler going and the whole place was still covered in ice.

Cousin managed to ventilate a decent antelope on the opener. Not real tall, but had good mass and good prongs.

Everything I've ever heard about the Bookcliff's is the deer start to move more by the calendar than the weather, but I'm no expert. If you have a rifle permit, a good place to start is in the McCook Ridge area.

Spent the weekend on the San Rafael Swell just west of Green River. No snow, lots of wind on Saturday and .25 inch of ice on the dogs bowl Sunday morning. No snow on the Colorado Bookcliffs where I live.

Yes, we were successful last year. Me and two other friends drew out last year and each of us harvested nice 4x4 bucks. The biggest was 28.5" and nice and heavy. We hunted in Wood Canyon, Indian Ridge, and McCook Ridge. Saw tons of bucks during the week. There were a couple 30" bucks taken that week. You will have great time. My advice is be patient.

The forecast is calling for snow on the Book Cliffs by the weekend. Not sure how much or how long it will last but it's supposed to stick to the ground out there. This early winter weather is crazy! I'm heading out to do some scouting Friday after work until Sunday so hopefully the roads won't be too sloppy...

Gator,

Not only did we see no bucks but we saw no deer and almost no sign that they were there. Saw plenty of wild 'Asses' though. The Donkey kind.

Gotabethere,

I sent a PM back yesterday, maybe it didn't go through? Let me know and I'll send another one. Send me your email address and it may be better.
