QTPIE's navajo elk

Well we finally got qtpie to pull the trigger on a navajo bull. Heck, we had to keep her off the trigger because she was to the point of just wanting to take some meat home.

We started the hunt off good. We were instantly into elk and were seeing herds of 10 to 30 bulls at a time. By the end of day 1 we had spotted around 70 bulls. One bull was a shooter but was too elusive for us.

The second day we started off by seeing a giant 400 "class" bull 50 yards from the truck. He had 63 or so inch beams. mid 60"s on mass, and about 45 to 48" inside spread. His g1 on his right was about 22" and his 3rd on his left was probably over 24". And that was all he had. Everything else was busted clean off. We quickly learned that every bull that was at or over 350 in september was not at or below 250 because of broken points.

At one point qtpie wanted to shoot a "used to be" 370 bull because he had his right side completely intact.

On monday we finally spotted this bull from about a mile and a half off. All we could see is that his left side was huge and that his sword and 5th on the right seemed to be a little weaker. We figured he was busted but was the best lookin busted bull we had found and decided to get on him.

Well 1 mile later we had blown out several bulls and made it to where we had last seen the bigger bull. Needless to say that our bull had been spooked and was now standing broadside at 1000 yards heading away. Jason looked at me and said lets take him! I was thinkin to myself WTF???! He told me later he figured all my talk on the internet must be true and it was time to put up or shut up. Well the bull was about a mile from the navajo border and we were on our last chance with this bull.

I had loaded some new ammo for my 338 lapua which was suppose to be balistically identical to my factory rounds but was definitely more accurate. (one hole 3 shot groups at 200 yards!). I had shot one round at 100 yards which showed it was zeroed and then one shot at 600 yards which was dead on which seemed to show promise to be identical to my old drop charts.

Anyways I decided to use my old data and dialed in the scope. Jason ranged again and the bull was standing broadside at 981 yards! I made final adjustments, put the gun in the triclops and locked down the tripod. Qtpie got behind the gun, found the bull and wiggled in the last adjustments and let fly. 2 seconds later snow kicked up directly behind the feeding bull. Funny thing is that with the suppressor on he never heard a thing. He simply kept grazing and none of the bulls even knew what happened. I loaded another bullet for qtip and put the binos back up. a few seconds later I heard an air rifle go off. 2 seconds after that I see the bull lurch forward and disappear into the trees.

1 hour later we managed to get to where we had last seen the bull and the rest is history. He hadn't gone 50 yards before he decided to give up.

It's not the 400 inch bull we were hoping for but the navajo isn't know for 400 bulls either. They have some great ones and terra was lucky enough to harvest a really good bull.

Some key measurements are his 19.5" g3, 22" sword, 15" g5, and 52" beams. he had about 6" busted off his right sword, and only had 4 1/2" left of his right g5. His inside spread was 37". Broken he came out right at 340". Unbusted he would have been a 360" 6x7. give or take 5" either direction. Either way I was completely dumbfounded to see my wife make that shot. Now she wont quit bragging about how much better of a shot she is than me. She's even thinkin about changing her screen name on her to ONEHOTSNIPER!

I just keep telling her theres only one stinky!

Here's a picture of her packing out 3 quarters, the cape and horns, and the 30lb trg 42 all at once. She wouldn't let me carry a single thing. Heck she even quartered and loaded the meat herself. And no I wouldn't be making fun of that guy who claimed his wife killed that colorado deer with her muzzy and cleaned and packed the entire animal herself with no help without getting any blood on herself anywhere. Heck, I'd never do that! LOL

and heres a picture of us standing above the canyon her bull was laying dead in. Mind you qtpie had to pack the bull out of that near vertical canyon all by herself.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-05-11 AT 09:48PM (MST)[p]Great story and that's quite a bazooka she's carrying, but am I missing something or are you trying to tell us she had all that load on her back at one time? I've only been on this site a couple weeks, so maybe I'm not privy to a previous joke on the site or something. My buddy is in great shape, about 240#, and couldn't carry more than the head/cape of his monster Wyoming bull along with his rifle at one time!!! Even boned out, a bull elk is going to be several hundred pounds of meat along with the head/cape, etc. She is more than a cutiepie if she can do what it sounds like you are saying!!!

Stink, you are such a puzzy. Qtip has her designer jeans on and your sportin boots camo pants and a puffy coat? No tennis shoes??? C'mon you coulda at least caped the head for her to save some weight. Congrats on the bull. Now wait for the MM ethics police to show up!

Great story stinky, That bull is one good looking animal. Congrats to QT on a great trophy.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-06-11 AT 01:00AM (MST)[p]Great shot on a great bull Terra!! Congrats and keep knockin em down :)

Topgun, she's probably the toughest chick I've ever met and I have no doubt she carried all that weight out!! I heard Stinky wanted a piggy back ride out of that canyon and she had to go back for him but not sure if that part really happened...

~Z~

Nice Job there QTPie!

981 yards huh?:D

That ought to Ruffle some Feathers around here!

She can out Pack/Shoot you stinkbug!:D

I am Medicine And I am Poison!

Great Job QUTPIE!!!! You have shown everyone how to do it this year. From that one pic it looks like the bull wasn't the only dead weight she drug around the mountain on her hunt.

Great looking Bull. Qtpie love your new rifle too that thing looks beautiful.Next year Stinky will have to get you a bigger pack. I'm thinking she owns you now Stinky she kicked you butt this year, I would have to say your 0 and 2 against her. LOL

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Cool story, great hunt and Holy crap, what a rifle... QT is definitely Cute! and a machine too!

But...how far did she pack that load? 50 yards?

Can we just clarify the weight she was carrying? A front shoulder with no hock or hide will go 40# EASY... so lets say she had two fronts (#80)...and a rear is going to be 50 min...up to #130... Pack is at least 5#... 135... My skull and horns were 37#, similar sized bull, but with no cape...with cape that head/horn combo is going to be at LEAST 45#...we are at #180... throw in the 30 pound rifle... #210 for QT...

That is unreal. I've packed #125-#135 several times and it was flat out miserable!!!

SOMETHING TO BE SAID ABOUT A GAL THAT SHOOTS A BIG 338 LAPUA
MY WIFE ALSO SHOOTS A BIG 338 ULTRA MAG ALL 120 LBS OF HER !

'IT AINT EASY BEING ME'

Thank you hornseeker for clarifying that for us all. The pack was pushing 300lbs. 2 hind quarters, 1 front shoulder, 2 backstraps, a head and cape and a gun. she weighs 115 lbs. Did I mention when we were in Africa that she packed out my giraffe whole!?????

What a gal!

Honestly though she wouldn't get outa the truck much before 9am. it was -9 degrees most of the hunt. She was a little mad cuz we took her out new years to the flagstaff pinecone drop. Lets just say she was very under dressed for the occasion and according to her she never did recover. She swears she had a chill the entire rest of the time we were hunting.

I call BS on that one cuz I took her to the hot tub in our hotel the next night until she was complaining about being too hot!

So there you have it guys. Stinky sacrafices all to find qt's bull and I went above and beyond to get it done. In fact I don't recall Jason getting out of the truck much either. All I remember him saying is he can't leave a client behind so he better stay in the truck and make sure qtpie is ok....... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm???????? lol

What a gal indeed.....

As eluded to above, I must be missing some sort of inside joke here......

Nice Bull QT!

Great Bull.... A good Taxy will have those broken points fixed up like they were never gone.....Nice stalk too...... Terry

Awesome bull Qtip

Hey Stink.....

Ummm, I'm not much of a marriage counciler (sp?) but I know better than to be throwing my wife's weight out there on the internet. Perhaps you should do an edit on that post and delete the part about her weight. Or maybe she's like my wife and doesnt care, just trying to look out for you.

Oh and if anyone else wants great marrital advice, Stinky is the BEST person and most qualified on this site to give it. If I recall a recent phone conversation we had, it went something like this..... Stinky - "What do you think about the idea of getting my wife very drunk and then slipping her some vicadin and tylenol pm? Me- "You know that sounds like a great idea, but what about the legal ramifications if it backfires? Stinky - "oh yea, but I dont think she'd be upset about it. Will you ask your wife if she would be upset?" Me- "I dont think I even need to ask her Stinky!"

Probably the funniest conversation I've ever had with anyone.

ok tayhot. that drugging thing was all in good fun. i was gonna give her her christmas present and see how long it took her to realize she actually got a present. i just didnt think about accidentally killing her. long story short is that i didnt drug her ok. its all good now though. lol

ego participate in Monasteriense muleys proinde ego sum bardus (I participate on monstermuleys therefore I am stupid)

I can't decide if I am more impressed with the bull or the weapon. Holy howitzer! Awesome pics and story.

I grin everyday when i look in the mirror and see the scar i wear proudly across my nose from that cannon in Colorado last year....i LOVE that rifle!!
Sweet bull Qtip, thanks for sharing that great story Tonyman!!

You two bring back some good memories.

I would say bessy got to hear that thing bark but that would be wrong. More like bessy got to hear that thing squeak! Or as terra says, pass gas rofl. That's literally what it does

I do believe slammy got to feel that thing bark before we put a muzzle on it lol. Sorry slammy, but that softball size hole in the shoulder of that buck you "slammed" was pretty sweet!

Very nice bull QTpie!! I think a certain persons bull over the fireplace just got bumped to the other side of the house.

It's always an adventure!!!

Great job!
Cool hunt, Good shot, excellent caliber etc.
Thanks for sharing her hunt with us.

Oh by the way, the photos were fantastic too!

Thanks, Zeke

congrats to your wife. Which tags will you be buying this year to have a guide help you kill something. Very interested in all your big time hunting adventures, and your ever so awesome long range shooting gun..

O BTW

U R STILL A POSER......

I'm not a poser! that's insulting! I'm a grade A A-hole lol.

I'm not sure at this point what I'm doing next year. I'm self employed and right now Im in one of the worst downturns I've ever seen. I'm workin my arse off to fix it and haven't failed before so I'm sure I will be doing something this year just not sure yet.

BTW 30buck, I saw your late hunt post. It sounded like you guys had a tough time. that sucks since its so hard to get utah tags. but at least you got a good bull. I really wish utah would fix its elk problems so when the locals finally get their tags they can experience a true once in a life time hunt.

BTW..... qtip didn't pack a thing. We loaded that pack with everything we cold fit on it, backed the truck up to qtip and loaded her down. I would hold her while jason took pics. When he would say ok I would let go and he would snap a shot then I would hurry and catch her before she fell. it was hilarious!

Hey stinky does qtpie have a single sister or neice maybe around the ages of 18 to 30 that like hunting like her? just askin is all.

STHU 30buck. You wanna follow me to kill a monster? I saw those pictures in your phone last year. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you guided members of your family to bigger bulls than I have ever had the pleasure of killing in my life.

So if you wanna tag along your more than welcome. But only if you bring some of that 390" bull carma along with you!

If I were you I would shoot myself now! That way I could die a happy man knowing I finally helped bring about the demise of a friggin giant! While were on the subject why don't you post up a pic of that 380-390 bull you took down a few years back. I don't remember who you helped out but it was a pig!

this bull, heck he isn't nothing like the monster's you kill Stinky.

Stinky:

Congrats again on the bull. Good thing she shot it on the rez though, cause anywhere else in AZ she'd got a ticket for using that cannon with that supressor on it.

Check out R12-4-303 A5. It reads, "An individual shall not use or possess any of the following while taking wildlife: contrivances designed to silence, muffle or minimize the report of a firearm."

Again glad you found some bulls were where we talked about, and what a shot she made!
