We have been down on this unit multiple time this past year and was on there last year for this same hunt. WE got some nice bulls last year so i had high hopes for her this year but was a little on the nervous side because she did not want this tag due to the cold but i talked her into it so this whole year all i have heard about was how cold its gonna be and how she better get her self a nice one.

I pulled into 2 days before her hunt started so i could glass around and hope to find some elk. Well we found elk and lots of them but nothing to big as of yet but the fact of seeing lots of elk and bulls made me pretty excited to get her down here and get the hunt going. Had camp all set up and ready to go..

We decided to hop on the horses the second day and take a good ride. Well it took us a while but we finally found some bulls. Got the spotting scope out and BAM!! good bull. Although he was only a 5X5 he was a good one. WE spent the rest of the evening tying the horses up and hiking up into this area this bull was in. Once up there he and another 6 had bedded down in a little patch of pines. He came out about 350 yards and i wanted her to shoot him so bad cuz for some reason i have a thing for a huge 5X5. This whole time she kept telling me she does not care about the score she just wants a nice symmetrical 6X6. She decided to pass so we went home for the night.

The next three days was not very eventful seen very few elk and she froze. By day 6 every body had left for home and it was just me and her on the mountain with only a few days left to kill something. WE got onto some bulls first thing in the morning and decided one was a shooter especially for how late in the game it was. Off down the mountain I go with her tailing. Took us about an hour or so to scale this mountain to get within shooting range and just as we pop over the ridge i see his tail end disappear into the trees. NOW for you who have been in the hills with your gal in freezing temps and not seeing many animals on a ten year waiting period tag know what i am talking about. She was done, ready to call it quits and go home. She straight said to me "Lets go home k." I could not believe what i was hearing but 6 long days into it with nothing but cold. I explained to her we could do it we will get one.

On our way up and out of there i turned around to where we just came from and found a bull. A SHOOTER i told her. WE hurried down got to 250 yards. BOOM...miss... the bull runs up the hill and i yell out aim higher. BOOM I have never seen an animal hit the ground that fast. HE was dead before he hit the ground. From there it was tears of joy and high fives.

This is the photo that will appear in your post.
She could not believe it when we got to him. I think she cried for a good hour or two. Well she was still crying when i was done cutting him up. Awesome bull she could not be happier. It took me and her two days to get him packed out of there

Isn't it the truth about having alot of pressure on when its the wife or the kids hunt...

Congrats to her for tuffin it out, and you for pushing on.
You were both rewarded with a great bull.
Awesome Job, and great pics!

Hard and tough hunt with the cold and the pressure of killing a nice bull on the Dutton, But you have a keeper in Her,Very nice bull.

Thanks guys. It was one of the toughest hunts i had been on. She did great and was a champ all the way through. She helped a ton with the meat. A whole hind quarter in her pack for one trip and when there is only two of ya an elk is one big animal to pack out on foot. It was a huge relief for the both of us when he hit the deck though even though we spent two days on the mountain gettin him out. It was well worth it

>Way to go, that's why you
>NEVER give up!

+1. She is a keeper forsure. Congrats on a nice dream 6x6 like she wanted.

I keep tryin to make her believe that the mountain man look had alot to do with our luck.:) HA she aint buying it.

Awesome story and pics. Congratulations on a beautiful trophy.
I'm familiar with the area you hunted and brings back fond
memories of past hunt's with my late father.

Hey bud, and you gave me chit for taking a couple days to post up my Dutton bull, what the freak? On the serious side though, congrats to you and Dixie! You are a stud of a hunting buddy. I can not begin to tell you how much it meant when you helped me on that rock pile even though I shot him the first day after you left. It kept me from going through a melt down with no help those first few days. I wished SO FREAK'N BAD I was down there with ya to just try to repay the favor you so generously showed me. After you helped me out and seen what you had to look forward to, you did one hell of a job getting dix her bull. You and Dix are truly awesome people! Cant wait to chase those turkeys n swans with ya this year.

What a good story...kinda neat when the Missus goes along on hunts. Congrats on a good bull.

Compromise, hell! ... If freedom is right and tyranny is wrong, why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?

Thanks guys. She def had a hunt of a lifetime and one we worked for. She loves her bull now i just got to get him on the wall. Which i will post up more pics when i do.

Congrats,

LAST EDITED ON Jan-07-11 AT 10:57AM (MST)[p]Congratulations!

My wife has come to elk camp with me the last 2 years in Wyoming. It's in late September and she complains about it being cold then! ;-) I don't think I'm ever going to get her talked into actually hunting though.

Looks like a great hunt and even better sharing it with your better half.

The camp picture at the start of your post gives away the ending of your story though. Nice bull.

congrats J!

If you would come off some of those coins & ditch that farm clothing she might stay warm.

Jason,

About time we got the story! The Dutton is a tough unit with a lot of country. Congrats to you guys on a great bull.

Well done and congrats to your wife on a great bull. Way to get it done together. Being with my wife when she harvested her first bull is one of my greatest hunting memories and I'm sure this one is at the top for you too.
