I drew one of the new 4th season rifle mule deer tags in unit 551 Colorado. It's a small unit just east of Gunnison. Hunt takes place from November 15-19. I got all my maps and have a general gameplan. Just curious how deer numbers are there this year, and maybe a few tips on hunting this time of year. I've never hunted mulies so late. Will the bigger ones be out in the open, or will I need to scan the timber like an October hunt? Thanks.

Looking forward to my first mulie hunt in several years.

According to the DOW the Gunnison Basin is way over population objectives for mule deer. You should see lots of bucks. Plan for snow and cold weather, we're already seeing overnight lows in the 20s. You might try the area south and east of Razor Dome. Deer should be moving to lower elevations by then.

Good luck.

That should be a great tag! I was there last year in nov. for elk and we saw lots of 150 bucks and a couple 185+ bucks. (unit 67 was loaded) Most of them were in the rolling sage hills. no trees, no cover, and no fear. I would put somthing to bed for opening morning...You may have a lot of hunters around.
good luck
