Guided WY elk hunt

LAST EDITED ON Jan-11-11 AT 06:51PM (MST)[p]I have been accumlating pref points for deer and elk. I will probably hunt deer unguided when I do decide to do that. I was thinking about going guided for elk. I don't want to rush who or when I go. I just want ti to be a well planned trip in the right unit with a good guide. If I come home empty handed then so bit it. At least I will not waste the years of building pref points.

I have 4 PP for elk now. I will be applying for a point this year. If I wanted to go in 2012, where and who would you go with? Camp hunts are fun but I am open to hunting anywhere. I don't want to break the bank on the hunt. I would rather put it off a uear or two so I can pay for a quality hunt. I should add, I don't need a book elk. I would like to shoot a good elk. I have taken a very nice bull in MT. I would like the opportunity for another good elk. If not, I would be happy with any branched antlered bull.

check out Diamonj J Outfitters they horseback hunt around the Big Piney area. I use to be partners in the company but live in NM and was to hard being so far away so I got out. But with that said they run a good hunt and camp www.diamondjoutfitters.com
tell Dwayne kevin sent ya

Contact Jon Keil @ http://www.keiloutdooradventures.com/. I know him personally but haven't hunted with him yet. If I pay for a guided hunt he will be the first place I go to. Not sure how many point you need for the unit but it's area 5. He grew up in the area and also guides fly fishing out of Casper..

The more I dig, the more I think I want to apply this year. My ideal situation this year would be able to find a good public area and spend archery and rifle season trying to find a bull DIY style. Like I said, don't need a monster. If I did a DIY and took a bull I would be tickled. I would have approached it that way but my hunting partner did not buy PP a few years and he is behind me now.

if your looking for a monster bull check out morning creek outfitters. they tag some pigs but expensive hunt

Not looking for monster. Of course if one steps out in front of me I am not going to pass it.

I would rather not break the bank since a monster bull is not a requirement. Since my standards for a bull are not high. It might even be a better call to try a trespass fee hunt.

kingfisher---Take a look at some of the units you might want to do a DIY in this year and then go in the draw odds to see how many PPs it looks like it will take. If you apply as a party with your buddy, they will add your PPs together and divide them by two to come up with the number of PPs you would have to enter the draw (ie. you have 4 and he has 3, so you would go in the draw with 3.5 PPs and draw before those with 3 PPs). That would be the way for you to go together and be assured he gets a tag.

Thanks Topgun, it sure gives me a bunch to think on with a short amount of time.

My buddy just called and he wants to come with me. I just don't want to waste my PP if he lost his. It sure would make it easier to decide which way to go if he comes along. I would even consider trying to find a ranch that offers a trespass hunt.

I have max points. From what I see I have good odds of drawing in a few draw units.

Time is running out and I don't want to rush to fast and make the wrong decision. If they were statewide tags, it would be much easier.

I would recommend Wyoming Wilderness Outfitters. Jake Clark is a stand up guide. I have been on one of his trips and they are top quality. I believe they shot a 380 this year. He has donated a half million dollars worth of trips to RMEF. You dont do that if you arent top notch.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-11 AT 05:53PM (MST)[p]kingfisher---You lost me on the comment in your last post about wasting your PPs and your buddy losing his! You don't lose your PPs unless you draw your first choice tag, so how would you waste them? The only way I can think of would be to apply for an easy to draw tag as your first choice, which you sure shouldn't do! You also lost me because in one post you said you had 4 PPs and in another you said you have max PPs. Max PPs for anybody in this years draw is 5. You would probably have to apply for a unit that takes fewer PPs if your buddy has fewer than you do, but you should still be a able to draw a pretty decent tag when they add your points together and divide by 2 to get your average for the draw.
I would say Jake Clark would be a great guy to book a hunt with if he even has any openings. He is a pretty well know outfitter who is passionate about elk and their welfare. He may already be booked up for 2011 though.

Sorry, what I meant was he may of let two years pass without buying points. In that case he lost them.

I have 4 points right now before the application.

I understood if we apply as a party when the hunters combine the points. They get divided by the number of applicants to give you one total.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-11 AT 08:37PM (MST)[p]Okay. That makes sense if he missed two years in a row and lost his because that's a bummer and $100 wasted. I can see where you probably won't want to apply as a party when you would then only go into the draw this year with two PPs. Is there a chance that he would go along to help you and for safety reasons if you put in with your 4 PPs and drew a tag? I don't even put in for elk tags any more and just go out and help friends for the fun of it. A lot of my better times out there have been when I was just helping out a buddy like this past season when we got this 357+" bull.

Nice bull

Normally I am the the one who plans the tips for our group. I can set guys up on some good Canadian whitetail hunts. I have actually passed on some good mule deer so that others in my group could take them in WY.

I even originally told my partner if were hunting elk and a big bull showed up he could take since I have a decent one. I just want to tag another antlered one.

You sure get plenty outfitter offers when you draw a tag. I would pick Jake Clark also, just because of his large support of RMEF.

I just got a email from another buddy who archery hunts in WY. He had asked me a while back if I wanted to join his group. I thought he was not going this year since know word. I guess they are, because he just sent me a email asking if I was in. Heck I don't even know where they hunt.

I hate to waste my points on a general draw that needs no points.

I maybe all set. Will be going with a group that has been going for years. Of course if we draw.

Stay tuned

Instead of weeding through all the info on the drawing process.

If I apply for my first choice hunt in a unit that has low odds to draw. Can I put in for the general as my second choice and have good chance of drawing the general if 1st choice is not successful?

Topgun
I have a place to hunt and a plan. My frined and his group have hunted a big ranch in unit 7 for about 20 years. I am told if I can draw a tag for that unit.... they can get me on the elk. I don't think I have any chance of drawing this year. I am going to apply for it anyway. They have max points and still have not drawn. Everyone will apply solo. I will also apply for a deer and antelope tag for the same area. The plan will be to try and get a cow tag. I would like to take even a cow with a bow. After all the elk meat is my first priority.

The ranch has some very big deer and antelope. That alone will be fun if I can get tags. I have to pay a trespass fee for the deer and antleope, but the elk I won't have too. We won't be on the same land.

Thanks for the help.

Drawing a GEN tag even as a first choice is not a sure thing. I have drawn back to back, but I have also been unsuccessful.

This was just discussed a few days ago on Wyoming thread and Elk thread I believe. Think it was called something like NR Application Question. Should answer your question.

Historically if you pay the extra $500 for the "special" tag you can draw the general tag with your 2nd choice and still get your point.

Get's expensive in a hurry though!
