I have heard in Utah and Nevada its not a good idea to apply as
a group for elk licenses. Can anybody explain why this would
be true.

I don't think you can apply in NV as a group only single applications. In UT as well as most states that limit non-res tags they give so few that there is a chance if your app. is drawn they may only have 1 tag left. So as a group your tag would be thrown out. Example if you apply with 3 hunters on an app. for a hunt that has 6 tags you only have a chance at the first 4 tags drawn because once the tags get under three their isn't enough left for your group. So you would only have half the cance drawing as someone applying by themselves.

In NV the only thing you can apply for as a party is deer tags. Elk, Antelope, etc only single apps will go thru. If you apply as a party for deer then i believe you get the number of bonus points that the lowest person has. Example...you have 5 points, your buddy has 1, i think you go into the draw with 1 point.

NV does party apps for deer only. They average the points and round to the nearest whole number before they square it. Non res and res can apply together, but the non res quota is still supposed to apply. I'm a little unclear with how they work the non res quota in though. My guess is that if they party draws and there are no more non res tags left it gets thrown out.

Wyoming has party applications of up to six for deer, elk, and antelope. If the party goes into a PP drawing, G&F averages the total points for the party and doesn't round up or down. Two guys with 3 and 0 points would go into the draw as 1.5 PPs, for example. They would be drawn for their first choice before someone with fewer PPs than that. That's why many people get confused when they look at the draw odds for previous years and a line might show <3. The < means "less than". For deer, elk, and antelope you get the tags even if your group would take the number over the unit quota. Not so in the other draws because there are a lot less tags drawn for the other animals in each unit.
