Not trying to start a argument but who here thinks utah screwed up the muzz hunt by moving it to september. I only got to hunt in november for two years before they changed it but sure was alot better from what I have seen, less people, more deer out and about. Used to be a great hunt. I never heard the reason the DWR moved the hunt if someone knows please share.

The reason for moving it was that they felt not enough does were being bred during the main rut. Does as you know, if not bred the first go around, they will come back in heat in Dec and this is when they were getting bred. The fawns were then born 1 month later and when the following winter rolled around they had 1 month less growth and fat on them. This caused a high winterkill rate in fawns.

So they moved the ML hunt into sept and the bucks can breed more of the does the first go-around causing normal births and normal age / weight come the following fall.

That is the reason given for moving it. I do miss hunting in blizzards though.

Success rates for the muzzleloader hunt went WAY UP when the hunt was moved to September.

I believe in most areas the muzzleloader hunt has a higher success rate than the rifle hunt-go figure......

It would be fun to hunt them in Nov.. I went out for a while this morning in your neck of the woods Prism and all I saw were does and elk!

100% Agree.

100% Agree again.

I agree with everyone but, I still thought there was more of a chance of getting a good deer in november. I enjoyed less people, and seeing bigger bucks. I think that the reason success rates went up is because when it was in november it kept only the people that actually wanted to hunt out there everyone else would run and hide at the first big snow. I also do not agree with the reason for moving it, I hunt in colorado and every year is better than the last and they hunt deer until the 15 of november, They do however micro manage the herd which from seeing colorado's deer works. If thats the reasoning I think maybe they should change the big bull hunts cause we hunt them during the rut as well, but are micro managed in utah. I don't know but I think the DWR would get the hint.

All of my friends that hunt Muzzleloader have been very pleased with the change.

I lived in Utah for a while and mostly muzzy hunted-It seems to me the muzzleloader hunt was originally supposed to be a PRIMITIVE weapons hunt. Let's face it with sabots, scopes (even if they are 1X), shotgun primers and guns that can generate 2500fps it is hardly primitive any more, in my opinion modern muzzleloaders are not much different from single shot rifles and the success rate of this hunt would appear to back up this conclusion.

Unless there is major change to the rules, i.e. no sabots, granular powder only, open sites--the DWR would be insane to move the hunt back to rut.

I THINKS THEY SHOULD GO BACK TO THE RUT HUNT, BUT ONLY ALLOW THE REAL PRIMATIVE MUZZALOADERS IN THAT HUNT, AND KEEP THE INLINES WERE THEY ARE AT NOW. I'M BY ALL MEANS NO EXPERT, BUT I WAS WONDERING HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD BE WILLING TO GIVE UP THERE INLINE'S TO GO BACK TO "TRADITIONAL MUZZALOADERS", AND HUNT IN THE RUT?

What! Only does and fawns around here, NEVER!!!

HAHAHA:)

I went out this AM and that's all I saw as well, and not even very many of them. Didn't see many hunters either, but the masses of people during the archery hunt more than made up for the lack of hunters I saw this morning.

Can you imagine the cluster if the hunt was moved back to November:( I agree that most of the deer shot are small, but they're small during the archery and rifle hunts too.......

If most hunters experienced a week of hunting Utah's general hunts they'd be shooting dinks too. It is what it is!!!

I'm sure a few great bucks hit the dirt this morning, but not many.

C'mon Utah prove me wrong!

If you are going to start talking primitive weapons once again, elk, prime rut, rifle, why? if we micro manage elk why not deer

If you want the muzzleloaders to go back to the way they were then make the rifle hunters go back to the old 30 30's and do it the way they used to. Its a no win situation in this state, to many people, to much private ground not enough animals growing to reach decent potential. I went out this morning and found and as-sh-ole that had a CWMU tag for the property next to the BLM land I hunt sitting on pblic groung shooting his rifle in the canyons to scare the deer on private ground so he then could shoot them, come ##### weed there is thousands of acres of ground to hunt that he had a CWMU tag for and he was worried about the few bucks that were on public ground. If I see him in there tomorrow ther is going to be an ass whoopin.

Well inlines predate the "traditional" hawkin by over 100 years. Germany had inlines in 1734... hawkins came around in the 1830s?

Both modern firearms are so far advanced from a real 1800's rifle its not even funny. Either type is made on CNC machines to near perfect tolerances, both utilize coil springs instead of flatsprings of the era. Just isnt much of a difference in them anymore other than cosmetics.

LETS MOVE THE MUZZ HUNT TO NOV AGAIN!!

AND HAVE A BUNCH OF DEER WITH ONE ASS CHEEK HANGING BY THE SKIN !!

WITH A MISSING LEG!!

WITH LESSER DEER EVERYYEAR !!

SOUNDS LIKE A PERFECT MANAGEMENT PLAN!

LOOKK THERES A 4 POINT AT 300 !!

THE ONLY huntercameron SAYING IT WOULD BE ALOT OF INJURED , DYING , AND DEFORMED BUCKS IF THIS HAPPENED!

They changed it because the DWR wisely decided that hunting the bucks during the rut was a bad idea. I think a lot more people do the muzz now because the weapons aren't as temperamental as they were 20 years ago. I never did do the Nov. hunt because it was pheasant season. I checked the stats once and it seemed the first couple of Sept. hunts had higher success than the rifle, but I think the rifle has been better overall the past few years. Yes, November is a great time to hunt; however, there is nothing wrong with being out the last week of September. If you really love the November hunt you may want to consider the elk muzz hunt.

I have to say that in my case the success rate did go up but I absolutely miss the November hunt. It was cold and you didn't see as many animals but when you did see them they were large mature bucks. I believe the change was for the money not the rut. There were far less hunters going out in November than in September once they changed it. I hunted the late muzzy hunt for many years and I was the only one on the mountain.....now during the bow and muzzy hunts it's a joke...way to many people and anything with antlers is dropping or wounded.
As for the inline vs. traditional...sorry don't buy it...you can shoot a conical bullet with a 1-28 twist on a "traditional" and get the same bullistics that you would see with an inline. I have hunted with both and you still have to get close and you still have only one shot.

What I wouldn't do for the November hunt!!!!! Thanks for that DWR. Another GREAT move!!!!!! NOT

Is it just me or has it been one pathetic general Utah deer hunt so far this year?

I believe that the muzzleloader hunt is sooooo popular now because of mainly one thing-DEDICATED HUNTERS!

If we put all of the dedicated smokepole toters in the field in November you could really kiss Utah's deer herd goodbye;!

Maybe it'd take a few of them off of the front in November though, which would be a good thing.

Hunting anymore is just a joke, To many damn people and the invention of ATV's was a mistake.

I want the November hunt back.

I agree this will be my first year hunting colorado in Nov. I have a South Eastern tag and this year the DWR has limited the riffler hunt to 5 days. Colorado has managed there deer herds so well they can offer 3 diffrent seasons when is Utah going to wake up!!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-23-06 AT 05:17PM (MST)[p]Prism,

'04 was great, '05 was good enough, & '06 has been great for the rifle hunters. Are you still sticking with how bad everything is? Just curious.
