My dad, brother and I are going to be hunting unit 67 in the 2011 muzzle loader elk season. We are going to be doing a do hit your self hunt and plan on camping some where. Im looking for any info from any who has hunted this unit! Looking for some public areas to start hunting in? Also looking for places to we can camp? For my brother and me, this will be are first elk hunt, so we are not looking for monster elk,but more for areas where we might see some numbers of elk. Ive been looking at maps of the unit and the southern border looks like it is very high altitude, do we have to hunt in this area or are there elk in some of the lower altitude areas? Thanks for any info. Adam wipp

have hunt d the wilderness area in southern part of unit for elk good access lots of nice places to camp with convient access to wilderness. Not sure if its the place to burn your point on a muzzy hunt since they changed the rules and every unit is now draw. Been looking at unit 49 for muzzy.Pm me if you want.

When did you hunt unit 67, its been a draw unit for 5 years for muzzle-loader elk? What season did you hunt 67 in? I talked to a friend who has hunted 48 and 49, he says that they are the tuffest units in the state to hunt physically. His freind hunted 49 last year, and he was a marathon runner and does iron-mans, and he said he thought he was going to die by the third day! But he did say it was a good elk unit. I was told that unit 67 has some areas that are lower elvation and a little easier to hunt?

Adam - Where the majority of the elk live during the early season will be within the higher elevations roadless areas as the previous poster explained. The south boundary is bordered by the continental divide, it is a steep unit with elevations over 11K where the elk live in the fall and it will be very similar to unit 49 as far as terrian. Look at google earth or a topo. Once you go north of Sawtooth Peak the terrian flattens out but it's all winter range habitat.

I hunted 48 one time with a muzzy and the next with a bow. Saw nice bulls both times. I was over the age of 50 both times and it wasn't that bad. Muzzy hunt was easier but my shot was too far back and I tracked him for the rest of that day and the next before I lost him. Went home upset for not making that killing shot. Second time (archery)I called in bulls, my son shot a decent 5x5, but he couldn't get a bull close enough to me. The terrain is steep but there is some nice trails there. The bulls are up at treeline and above. We found them always there every morning. Good luck!

mickeyelk what year did you hunt unit 48? Are you a resident or a non-resident of colorado. I have 10 elk points and im looking for best place for muzzle loader hunt that i can draw? did you see many bulls when you hunted 48? Whould you recomend unit 48? 67 took 8 and they only give out 5 non-res tags. so i was thinking that hunting preasure should be limited. Also most of the unit is public.

Message: Unit 48 was 2003 and 2006 non resident. It took me 3 bonus points to get the muzzy tag in 2003. Saw plenty of bulls and they were bugling pretty hard at that time. I don't think I would spend 10 bp's for it though. I've hunted 67 during first rifle back in 2007. No bugling and all the bulls were up high and didn't see many hunters. Good area.

>Hunted 2008 the fall after the bad winter.I hunted the 3rd rifle season.Wasnt much snow up high that year yet.Except for some drifts and patches in the dark timber. The rds going to the wilderness boundarys are very good. My father had enough pts to draw the unit for muzzy but its very hard to get him to try a new area. Only reason i threw the unit 49 out there because i was looking at that unit for him because it looked like it took about the same amount of points to draw when i did research and now that all units for muzzy are draw didnt know if one of the otc units might be better or an easier hunt.A 200" bull would be a good bull for that unit on 1st try imo. Now will those bulls be on the wilderness boundry where u can get the truck too i dont know but there are some really nice parks in there.Where i hunted it only took a couple hrs to hike to the top of the divide thru the wilderness and you dont need to get that high to find a vantage point to glass the buck brush but it could be a tough pack out if you dont have horses and some of those willows are very thick.
