WHAT WILL HE SCORE?

This buck is not very wide, I would say about 24 but has great forks and good main beams. I think he will score around 185. What do you think?

I bet you are right on about the score i would say 185 to 190 maybe 25 inches i would blow it over if he came my way.

the mainbeams and browtines are a bit average but I'd venture to say that your guess is pretty close.

I agree with BCBOY...he should score around 180. Nice buck, thanks for sharing the pictures.

Thats about it in the mass department for a 5 yr old deer down here. Much more is a rarity, and less mass than this guy is fairly common. Eyegaurds of any size are even rarer. The best eyegaurds I have seen on muleys in general are South Eastern New Mexico, some there would give a whitetail a run for their $$. Im grossing this guy 177. A very nice deer for sure. Good luck this season.

I think that Lifeisgood is really close. I doubled his good side and came up with the same thing. Let the air out of him and let us know what he scores...

Beautiful buck but I think you are all over estimating him. I don't think he'll gross over 170 and net 165 tops. Very tops. Kill it and prove me wrong.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-02-06 AT 08:42PM (MST)[p]Nice buck! I would guess around 168-172 gross. Those cheaters are going to knock it down a bit on the net.

Big enough in 99% of the places I hunt! What's the story on it? It's a great buck and I'd be happy to have him in my sights.

I'm gonna say 180ish gross. He's got some pretty good forkage going on!

Anyone who thinks this buck is in the 160's is WRONG. I would guess anyone that says that has never put a tape on a deer before. 160 class bucks don't have forks like that I would say he goes at least 180" gross. Good luck on getting him.

Here is a 182 buck I killed last year. Take away his 4 inch eyeguards and his 6 inch spike coming off the main beam behind the g2 and you have a 170 buck. The buck pictured in this post has a little bigger main frame but with small eye guards and no real big extras he's about 177. Maybe 180 but I really don't think so.

A nice buck for sure... But sure doesn't look 180" to me. He's got Great forks, n good mass. But his height and width just aint anything special. I'd say around 174" but his face looks young to me. I bet in a year or two he could easily be 180" or better buck.

You guys are on crack. 185? Give me a break, you guys think that buck is only 5 points away from booking?

That buck is in the 160s.

A very nice buck in most any place, but 180-185, there is no way. The buck has good forks but almost no mass and the main frame is a little weak. Let this guy live 2 more years and then you will have a for sure 185 maybe better buck. Would still shoot him though... Hope you get him.

I tried to objectively add it all up and came up with an 171 inch main frame. I real nice buck for sure. The main beams and spread credit are keeping him out of the 180s.

Main=20
G1=2
G2=16
G3=11
G4=10
Sub Total=59
Total Tine Length=118 (left and right combined)

H1=4.5
H2=4
H3=4
H4=4
Sub Total=16.5
Total Mass=33 (left and right combined)

Spread Credit=20
Non-typical inches= 4
--------------------------------------------------------
Total Gross score = 175 (138+33+20+4)

Watch out for ground shrinkage. Think 140ish and be surprised if he goes 160.

Well I ain't on crack but I have seen too many deer with "ground shrinkage". When you are hunting, you don't have time to measure all the tines and we all too often overestimate a deer or an elk. That'w why I presented a rather admittedly conservative stragegy "Think 140 and hope for 160." It is always better to be surprised by the size of a buck than to be disappointed. My personal philosophy of trophy hunting doesn't reside with official scoring or measurements. I will never ever say "I will only take XXX size buck on this hunt" - but I will say "I will take the right one". If that means that I have the opportunity to take a 140 buck at the right time and the right circumstance then gues what - I won't miss. If that buck happens to be bigger and the cirsumstance is right well I won't miss it either. It's just too hard to accurately field judge any animal - especially from a pic that may have been taken at over 50 yards away - within any unarguable parameters, so I take a conservative route. Is this a nice buck? You bet. Would I take it? If the circumstance were right - you bet. Do I give a rat's butt what it scores? HELL NO.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-06 AT 10:07AM (MST)[p]I believe this buck netted about 130-133, can't remember now but I know that is close. only had a 21 inch spread and very weak front forks, no brow tines either except a small one on one side.
The deer up top has to be at least 165 net or more.

Would somebody please shoot this buck and score it!:)

I'm still thinking 175-180! I don't think it'd go over 180, but I'm confident that it may tickle it.

Who knows, pics are tough!

180's? Um...No. The deer is probly 160's to 170 @ best. The skylined photos may be tricking some guys.

I agree Almass. Also never judge a deer when his ears are back - they always look 4X bigger.
He is still a shooter in my book, especially if he were here in South Dakota.

Sorry guys I we will not know the score this year? I had this buck at 30 yards with my bow and decided to let him walk, I took pics. instead I have been watching this buck for the last 3 years and I think he will be a pig next year. I have had my hands on alot of 160 and 170 class bucks and this guy is right at the 180 mark I think gross that is who cares about net.
