LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-11 AT 06:12PM (MST)[p]I'm 48, in good shape, however, sometimes get asthma with a chest cold. I've hunted elk on and off over the decades since I was 18, probably ten times, with my dad, friends, semi guided and guided hunts, mostly archery and some rifle. I've never been successful. I've had chances and made mistakes. I'm a pretty good hunter, not great.

I've dreamed about bull elk since I was 12. My family is young, 2 and 7 year old, and my wife is overwhelmed with them and work. I do not have lots of time to scout, except for some long weekends. Living in San Diego, doesn't make it easy. I'm not poor, but do not have the money for a fully guided hunt. I like to do it myself and realize I tend to get in over my head.

I feel unlucky hunting elk with a bow. I've gotten into them good, but the mature ones in AZ and NM are sure tough to close the deal on with a bow. When I've hunted with a rifle in over the counter units, the elk have been tough to find.

I'm thinking an early season muzzy, or better would be rifle. A 300 bull would tickle me and I could check it off my bucket list.

So, what are the easiest to draw and easiest for an unconnected non resident to successfully rifle hunt? Thanks Bill

Are you asking about a certain state, or any state ?
Do you have any points built up anywhere ?

Utah, and I have 9 points. I meant to say Utah in the subject.
Thanks Bill

If 300 is your goal, I can show you a few of them on the wasatch. It is not super difficult to draw as they have a lot of tags available on that unit. However it can be a physically demanding hunt.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

I'm not sure but with 9 points a nebo premium might be a possibilty. Tough hunt with rough country but be able to hunt all 3 seasons

Wasatch, Book Cliffs, Manti, SW desert are a few of the units that would be good. Any one of them would give you a shot at a 300+ bull, as long as you do your part.

I drew Wasatch archery last year with 8 and scored on a 300+ bull. I got tons of help here at MM that put me into the bulls right away. I'm 42 and did the whole hunt solo DIY. I did get help with the packout. I still have all my reserch and would be glad to help out if you decide on that area. Like you, I did my reserch before applying and choose Wasatch for the abundance of opportunity at a good bull. PM me if you need some more help.

Here's the story of my hunt

Have you looked at the odds on here: http://huntodds.monstermuleys.com/

Just put in elk, nonresident, and your points and hit search. You don't have to put in unit or weapon. That way it lists all the units and their odds.

The only one I know I would not consider in your situation would be South slope/ Diamond Mt. Just remember the odds can change dramatically from year to year
