Wyo Elk Results-18th!!

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-11 AT 07:37AM (MST)[p]Unsuccessful.

That makes 255 bonus points & no tags drawn in 3 years.

I had picked a unit with 50% odds with max points last year.

Holy Moly!!!!!

5 for 5 years in a row Any Elk 'cheapie fee'!!!

Plus I drew my RP cow tag too!!!

I love wild wonderful Wyoming!

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-11 AT 10:25AM (MST)[p]Unsuccessful. Max points again next year. Great to see they also posted the drawing odds reports already too. It looks like some of the premium units are slowly starting to get easier to draw......someday....someday......

Good Luck to those that drew.

The odds for the unit we applied for were 50/50, unfortunately, even with 5 pts, we were in the unsuccessful 50 percent. Time to start thinking about a mule deer hunt.

Yeehaa! looks like I'm chasin' them with the bow this year while the boys have at'em with the artillery. General tag, hmmm now where to go? Scratch, scratch.

Great job on the Unit 100 tag. That is a tough tag to draw.

I drew the general tag again, as well as the reduced price cow tag. Looking forward to WY as always.

Bill

Congrats on the 100 tag! That shows there are some that draw those few random grab tags with no PPs!!!

Notta!!! On a Unit with 50% draw odds last year. The draw odds this year show 104 applicants????? Only 6 last year for 3 tags. this seem wrong to anyone else.

Maybe I checked the resident draw oods. I'll have to back and re-check.. Anywho, we'll see what 6 PPs can draw next year.

Wow!!!!!!!! Notta!!!!!

Checked draw odds twice. Shows 103 people applied for 0 tags, Type #1, Unit 111. Last year 6 applicants for 3 tags.

Guess I'll see what 6 PPs will draw next year.

Unsuccessful for all three boys on 100. Now I'll try for deer with max points and moose with 10 points.

califelkslayer---I see last year that unit 111 had 6 people with 4 PPs apply for those 3 tags in the Regular Draw like you said and 8 applied in the Special PP Draw for 3 tags. This year 29 applied for the 3 tags for a 10.34% chance in the Regular PP Draw and only 3 appled for the 3 tags in the Special PP Draw. I can't believe that Regular Draw went from 6 first choice applicants last year to 29 this year and I wonder what made so many more apply as a first choice. It just shows that even when you think you have this PP system halfway figured out, when guys can move their choice around from year to year ##### happens as Forrest Gump said!!! Sorry you didn't draw!!!

My buddy and I were 2 of the 29. I knew that would happen. It was a good unit for those odds last year and 27 other guys knew the same thing. Had we known we probably would have anted up. We are going to draw AZ next year so won't have to play the same WY guessing game.

OK here's my theory on Wyoming and the special draw.

To me the Wyoming Elk draw is like a "FREE" draw.I will know the results of the draw before i have to apply for any other hunts except Arizona Elk.

For this reason i apply in the special draw every time( limited units only no general).I drew 1 tag the year before points started and 2 since.

To me the extra cost is worth it knowing i have at least one hunt planned. From there i can apply for more sought after units in other states knowing i have a place to hunt.

As far as the cost it's actually not that much more considering the overall cost of a out of state hunt and not that far off from some of the other states.

New Mexico -$291
Arizona - $317
Utah -$276
Nevada +271

Remember last year unit 113 was open for bull tags. It is only open for bull I think every third year. So if you look at last years draw there was a ton of guys that listed 113 first choice. And much better draw odds in most units. 111 at 50%, of course I was in the un. for it last year

So the low number of apps. in most of the units. Well this year they had to go back to their normal units and the draw odds went up!

I understand your statement about knowing real early whether you have drawn a tag and don't need to apply anywhere else, but I'm a little bit confused on your statement that it isn't that much more money. For the Regular nonresident draw you have to fork over $591 and it's $1071 in the Special draw. That's a significant amount of money compared to what you listed for the other ststes.

Oilcan,

You pegged it, that is exactly my theory on the special elk draw in relation to other states. Good thing everyone does not think that way though!

For sure TG.

I got two tags--Any Bull and my RP cow tag for under $900 bucks so the $300 I saved will bank roll two round trips scouting/hiking ect. already.

Plus are those Youth tag prices from other states you listed oilcan?

Robb

Those are not the tag prices they are the difference in price of the tags
The difference between the reg and special is pretty big but I only apply for limited areas not the general tag.

For example the area I put in for in reg draw with 3 points 0% chance to draw with 3 in the special draw 100% drawn.

So the price of the special tag is about $300 more than the price of a tag in Arizona,Utah or new Mexico the other places I apply.

This is my opinion but I feel it is worth it knowing I have at least one tag in hand.

I think those are the difference in price from the wyo. special fee to the fees of the other state tag fee's.
Note the + or -
Nev. has a high priced elk tag. all other states are cheaper, OPPS, LESS EXPENSIVE!!!

Robb---Yep, I understand what's he trying to say now. When he mentioned the Special Draw I thought that's what he meant he put in for. For two elk tags, I would agree with him that's not a bad deal when you consider that's two big animals for less than the higher priced draw for one bull.

Maybe Oil will come back and let us know what he really meant. My theory? he was talking deer tag prices for the other states?? Cuss Nevada elk alone is $1,200.00.

Or maybe he was just talking about what it costs to get in the game.

Now I confused myself.

Sorry for all the confusion been busy at work and not able to reply.

So let me try to explain and remember this is my opinion i know everyone has there own stratagies for applying.

Those are not the tag prices they are the difference in price of the tags in those states and a Wyoming Special tag.Just to name a few Elk tags i apply for every year.
Arizona $746
Utah $795
New Mexico $780
Nevada $1200

So the price of the special tag is about $300 more than the price of a tag in Arizona,Utah or new Mexico.

The difference between the reg and special is pretty big but I only apply for a limited area not the general tag.
For example the area I put in for in reg draw with 3 points 0% chance to draw with 3 in the special draw 100% drawn.

So my point was i don't mind spending the extra $300 if i know i have a tag for sure regardless of the results of the other states. If you consider the overall cost of a out of state hunt i feel adding the extra $ is well spent.

Let me ask you this how many people after the draws are done and did not draw anything wished they would have fork over an extra $300 for a tag and place to hunt.I'm thinking quite a few, i see them here every year scrambling for left over tags and land owner tags for MUCH more money then that special tag.

IF i have other hunts lined up i don't do it but if not i always apply in the special draw.Hunting means to much to me and i'm getting to old to be missing any hunting seasons.

Hope thats a little clearer

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-11 AT 05:13AM (MST)[p]Thanks oilcan-------I am following your price fee structure now.

Agree-- a guy has to have a plan going into any/every draw that is for sure.

Have an enjoyable hunt

Robb

Got to consider everything, how bad you want to hunt WY this year, number of $64 applications you will have to eat before drawing, and your best guess at the difference in draw odds....Odds are generally better high dollsr, but there are exceptions. If going for a tough draw, six more years of $64 fees will about be a strictly dollar push at the difference.

Missed the early draw results Friday hoopla cause I was javelina hunting. Checked last night and see I got 63-1 cheapie! Cool! Great welcome home present.

oilcan---Thanks for the update and clarification. You are a very wise man when you really look at things that way and it makes perfect sense!!!

Hey EF-----cool tag...

Question.....

Should I do 128 Late deer(again)-----you know why I ask!

Mr. 15 pts...........

Or should I just roll my fuzzy dice elsewhere.....
