Boys,
I am on the fence! I have enough points to draw Wasatch, but do I hold out one more year for Monroe, Boulder, Beaver, etc? It would be great to get a bull 350 Plus, but I am nervous with how things are going, that I need to "get in while the gettn is good!"

Do you guys think that with the burn in Beaver, that it will just be crazy growth this year?

Do you think that since last year sucked in most units, this year will be "Sick" archery hunting!?

Is Archery better in some units than others?

Thanks and I look forward to your comments!

GOutes, I'm that guy sitting on the fence beside you since I didn't get my Wy tag. I'm leaning towards sticking to my plan and holding out as I've got some backup hunts lined up. Good luck!

Archery San Juan is a very good tag, but takes around 14-15 points to draw. Monroe and Pahvant would be my second choices for archery.

I'm not a fan of boulder, thick as hell and too much water. Beaver could be good cuz of the burn but everyone else knows that too. San juan is a looong shot even with archery. I'm partial to Monroe. Its an AWESOME archery hunt! Pahvant would be better bulls but its an area I don't know. If you decide on Monroe let me know. I found some great bulls last fall!
Just becuz last year archery was slow doesn't mean it will be great this year. No matter, I'm pumped for this fall!
Good luck!

I love the boulder. If you put in the time there are some monster bulls on there and 350 is very possible. It is very thick and you do have to scout it hard to be successful. That is one big mountain. If I lived closer I would burn my 9 points on a boulder archery tag. My second choice would be Monroe followed closely by Pahvant. All three of those unit have 350 potential with a bow. I don't know the San Juan but I am sure it is worth the wait.

If you draw Wasatch you most likely will not take a 350 bull.

I would go and hunt the Wasatch. There are plenty of 350 bulls on the Wasatch you just have to hunt hard and find a good spot. The Beaver and Boulder are good but take alot more points to draw. I have four friends who have 13 points who have been building points and are going to put in for Boulder archery this year which will make it even harder to draw. ALSO-I know of 3 elk over 400 inches shot on the WASATCH last year.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-11 AT 10:00PM (MST)[p]If your odds show that you have the ability to draw the Beaver unit I wouldn't hesitate. I personally saw two bulls that would make your 350 goal look like a sick puppy:) And many others that I would have happily harvested. got a buddy that has 14 points that he is going to hopefully "burn" on a beaver tag. JUST TOO GOOD NOT TO!! Get with me if you are lucky enough to pull a tag, hopefully we'll be down there too.

Your other choices are probably good ways to go as well.

I think there are to many people that think all it takes is a big tag to kill a big buck or bull. Sure it might help but i think your best chances are on a unit you are familliar with especially with a bow in hand.

If bowhunting was easy rifle hunters would do it...

I agree with SW. Unless you have a lot of time to get familiar with a unit, I wouldn't draw an archery tag on it -- despite all the hype. Pick a unit you know. You'll give yourself a better chance at taking a big bull.
