I'm a Newbie and trying to plan a Elk hunting trip for buddy and me. Fairly open on location and we are looking for a guided hunt. Very interested in any guidance on location or outfitters anyone can offer.

I'll add a Colorado recommendation to the list - Winterhawk Outfitters ( http://www.winterhawk.com ). It's a real wilderness hunt and an incredible experience. Larry and Laura Amos are the owners and are wonderful people. Give them a call and they're always happy to answer questions.
No matter what outfitter you choose - BE SURE to do plenty of research! Make a list of important questions and get on the phone with each outfitter to ask them. Also, ask for a list of recent references that you can call.

Choosing an outfitter
I've never been on a fully outfitted and guided hunt, so take it for what it's worth.
It seems to me the best way to choose an outfitter is to first, decide on what your expectations are. After that, look at what states and units can provide that type of hunt.
Select a few areas that live up to your expectations, and only then should you start looking at specific outfitters that operate in those areas and provide the type of service you are looking for.
Do an internet search on the outfitters, and look for independent reviews. Remember one bad review or one good one doesn't mean much. Look for multiple reviews to get an idea of how satisfied most of his clients are.
Narrow it down to a few, then contact them and ask for a brochure if he has one, and references. Call the referances, and call the local game warden. Ask him about problems and complaints with the outfitters you are looking at. When looking at the brochure or web site, read the fine print twice.
There are lots of good outfitters, and at least a few bad ones. There are good areas and lots that are not so good for any specific type of hunt. The bad ones are not going to tell you they are bad, and the ones operating in bad areas are not going to tell you that their success rate is low. If they did, they would be out of business fast.
