LAST EDITED ON Oct-09-06 AT 11:43AM (MST)[p] I got a phone call from one of my buddies that has a paunsi deer tag and needs some help. I have hunted the unit one time and saw some nice bucks south of tropic. He said they saw very few deer this weekend on the southwest end of the unit. Has anyone seen any nice bucks????? If so, a point in the right direction would be much appreciated! Thanks!

in a few weeks there will most likely be a lot more deer in that part of the unit. pray for cold weather. there are a lot of deer in there when the weather turns cold.

Just got back from the Pauns. We spent most of the time up on top and the deer are moving off for the most part. My brother killed a good buck on Saturday afternoon, but that was of one of only 15 deer we saw all day we hiked into several areas that are always full of deer before the migation and only saw two decent bucks and no other deer. I would look low, we where headed low when we ran into a group of four bucks headed down the mountain at noon and he killed one of them.

I would hunt low I have been out there the last couple of days helping a buddy and all the deer are migrating so I would get on a migrating trail and wait for that 200 incher to wander by!

I just got back from the pauns today, we had a great hunt, saw tons of deer, They are for sure on the move. You need to hunt the migration routes. We did not see a buck that would go over 170" and we looked @ 15 to 20 bucks every day. I think the big bucks are still hold up on the private and will not leave until they start to rut. Good Luck, L.T.

P.S. the muzzy hunt should be awesome!!

It sounds like many are having a great time! The deer are moving some. I'll be down there with my bro during muzzle season Nov 3-9th. What sort of buck should he hold out for? I hear a 190+ class buck can be reasonable expectations. If you hunt hard and not pull the trigger too soon. Will they be rutting much by then? We have maps. Still gathering info. Thanks

I just got back yesterday and it was a tough hunt. We started up on top and finished in the middle of the unit. We saw some decent deer on top but they were definitely moving down. I ended up shooting a heavy 4x4 with 4 and 1/2 inch eye guards. He is not real wide and his forks are not real deep but I am happy with this buck. Call me if you want to talk about specific areas.

Lets see some pics. I am headed back down for a muzzy hunt and would like to hear what the deer have done since the opening weekend.
