My son has a tag for the 2b youth hunt that starts on October 21st. It will be his first deer hunt. We have done some research and have maps of the area. If anyone is willing to share information on the area I would appreciate all the help I can get.

Thanks

JPbucky,

My son has the same tag this year. Last year he also had the tag. It was a great hunt for a 11 year old boy on his first big game hunt. My hat is off to the New Mexico game and fish for offering a great opportunity for the youth. We found that the deer were plentiful down low with yearling 2 pt. bucks with the groups of does just off of the dirt roads. We did not see any large bucks but honestly we focused on any legal two point and they were relatively easy to find. We hunted the north part of the unit off of the Rosa road. There is a lot of oil/gas traffic but the locals we talked to were very helpful and it was a great experience for my son who harvested a nice forked horn buck the second morning. I would be happy to answer any specific questions you still may have. I am no expert on the area but have hunted it now in three different seasons. I hope you have a great hunt and enjoy the time with your son. I know it ranks as one of the best times I have had with my boy and am looking forward to doing it again.

You should have an enjoyable hunt as this is the best unit for deer hunting in New Mexico. There will be deer throughout the unit as bad weather in southern Colorado triggers a migration through this unit. We typically hunt the northern part of the national forest from Buzzard Park up to the Colorado state line. If you want a good sized buck get off the main road and use the closed gas mining roads to your advantage. They are easy to walk and have restricted access (only gas mining personel are allowed on them) which will give you a better opportunity for a larger buck. Many people road hunt and also have pretty good success but usually the road kill bucks are smaller. Because the southwestern slope in Colorado has already received snow, this hunt should be outstanding. If you see a good amount of deer on your way up the main roads prior to the hunt you will know the migration is on and in that case patience is the key to tagging an good sized buck. Make sure you take equipment to help you up and down the roads as the are very muddy and slick during bad weather. A good idea is to go up in the middle of the night as the roads freeze over and alow for easier traveling. Let me know how you do as I also will be hunting the unit during the first rifle hunt. You son is going to have the time off his life! Good luck
