LE vs CWMU

Well the Utah Draw deadline is coming up soon and I'm still debating with myself back and forth on what I should do.
I have 13 elk points and I would like to hunt with a rifle or ML. Im not sure If I should put in for a cwmu unit and go hunting. The cons of a cwmu is I'm not so sure of how it is managed and if I will get a fair shot at every area on the unit. Plus I will only get so many days to hunt with no scouting. One more thing is that some units they only let you bring one guest with you. Pro of a cwmu is chances of a bull 300-330 will be good. My odd on drawing are much better.

As for the limited entry units I could scout all summer long. It could be a big event and make it into something big with friends and family. I really enjoy the whole experience. My odds are not the best at drawing still with just 13 points.

So I'm just throwing this out to the group to see what your thoughts are with this dilemma and what you would do to help clear some things up for me.

Of course there are a lot of variables. I have been on or participated in both CWMU's and several le hunts. I absolutely would go with the le unit. I'd rather make my own decisions and not be limited to when and where I hunt.

I would say you already know what to do! I wouldn't put my hunt in the hands of a cwmu because of the reasons you said.
13 points is enough to draw alot of different hunts. Dont think that you have to hunt one of the most popular talked up units to kill a good bull.
If you want to go with a cwmu Ill tell you about the one in my backyard. There are some great bulls and 13 would probably get you a tag. P.M if interested.

With that many points i would not take the chance with a CWMU, especially if you have family and friends who want to help and make it a big overall experience. You have so much more freedom to make your own decisions and hunt the style of your choice. Stick with the LE, you can't go wrong, and taking the time in the summer and fall scouting is the best part about it.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-11 AT 07:58AM (MST)[p]With 13 points the chances of you killing a 300"-330" bull with a rifle are great on alot of units with a rifle. I'd hunt the LE unless you personally know someone operating a CWMU. Good luck

13 Points. If a 300- 330 bull is what will get your boys to tingle then there are multiple units you could draw this year and kill one of them.

With 13 points I would defiantly do a ML tag
You have enough points to draw over half of them
And after 13 years of waiting I think it will offer a better experience as you said
As far as you wanting a 300-330 bull.The ML hunt is usually in the rut.Your chances have got to be just as good if not better

With a rifle, 13 points, and hunting in 2011. Your options are:

-Most Late Hunts
-Cache Units early
-Diamond Mountain early
-LaSal Early

If you want a rut hunt, then I would considering a muzzle loader, or waiting.
