If you had 17 point for elk in Utah, what tag would you put in for?

I do archery hunt, but I don't know if I dare put in for an archery only tag.

The Pahvant muzzy tag is kind of where I am leaning.

What are your thoughts?

That many points you could draw a pretty damn good premium tag. Any archery hunt including san juan which would be about anybody's dream. You cant go wrong with the filmore though. But with that many points i would seroiusly look into a premium tag.

If I had 17 points and wanted to hunt in 2011. My list would be:

-San Juan Muzzleloader
-Boulder Early Rifle
-Pahvant Muzzleloader.

A lot of it depends on how well you know the units.

Good luck!

I have been on the San Juan unit a bit but we were bear hunting. We did see some big elk though.

I have never stepped foot on the Pahvant but I think I could find the elk.

I have considered the Manti Premium, that is the unit I know the best. The quality of bulls is way down from what it was but I know there are still a few big ones left. Some family members have had the Late Manti tag the last couple of years and we have done very well.

I just don't want to blow that many points. I want to make them count.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-11 AT 01:57PM (MST)[p]Monroe early rifle (if you want to hunt this year on a good unit with a rifle tag)
San Juan (any of the early season tags)
Pahvant (any of the early season tags)
Beaver rifle

I would have a hard time passing on San Juan Archery though, but I like archery.

with that many points dont take the chance on an archery tag! You can draw almost any tag you want. put the odds in your favor so when you see that bull you want, you dont have to get into bow range.

Odds show 17 points would have gotten you a San Juan early rifle tag last year. To answer your question, if I had 17 points, I woulnd't be putting in for archery, and I would probably do the San Juan early rifle. Either that or a premium tag for Wasatch.

Looks like this year there will be about 60 guys
with 17 points going for 15 bonus tags on San Juan early rifle.

The premium tags are pretty tempting. I would definantly love to try with my bow and then have some gun hunts as a backup.

You've come this far, why not hold out for a premium tag. It's the best off all 3 worlds. San Juan, Monroe ,and Pahvant are all excellent choices, you wouldn't be disappointed with any of the 3. But if you know the Manti that well, go with it! That's why I'm sticking to the Wasatch.

I would say Monroe, Pahvant and San Juan get a lot of attention. I would say don't over look Boulder or Beaver if you do Premium.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-11 AT 06:53PM (MST)[p]if i was you i would do the premium hunt evenif it takes you 1 more year to draw. go to the top of the page to draw odds and check out your odds on premiums. what unit do you know best? and where do you live? i would say if your an archer do premium cause you can hunt archery and only crack one if its huge otherwise you got muzz and 2 rifle hunts to fill your tag on. i think you would be crazy not to do premium.

beaver, pahvant,sw des, san juan, and several others you couldnt go wrong on!

Nothing wrong with manti premium. Some of the biggest bulls shot last year came off the manti.

1 in 8, I would do early rifle for the SJ for the next few years if I had to.

Try not to get depression off this reply but.....
If you want Fillmore Pahvant prem they give 1 bonus tag. 4 people above you put in for it last year so your looking at watching 3-4 years go by before it drops to your pts of one below. 8 people put in for it with your pts. last year. So you would be guaranteed that tag in between 3 and 12 years from now.

San Juan worse at a guaranteed tag in between 3 and 16 years from now which is pathetic considering it would have taken you 33 yrs to draw this tag if you have no luck at all.

Monroe would be a good shot. One person put in with your amount of pts. last year and drew the one bonus tag. So you get a couple jumpers and I would say you'd be guaranteed the tag in between 1 and 3 years from now.

Looks like you could draw a muzzy or archery tag for any of those units and hunt this year.

Early rifle Beaver is up for grabs.
Early rifle Pahvant your looking at 5 years
Early rifle San Juan your looking at 4 years

I wish you luck elkantlers as well as everyone else on MM. I hope we all get a chance to hunt that special OIL hunt in Utah before we fall over dead.

Thanks, Utahelk1.
I have been giving it quite a bit of thought. I have been putting in partners with my son since he was old enough to put in, Thats why I have not drawn already. I may put in with him again this year and see what happens (we would average at ten points). The Premium tags are very tempting though.

I get why you want to draw a tag with your son as a group but the other way to look at it is if you put in seperately and you each can draw a tag for 2 different years/seasons, you will get to spend twice as much time with him while still getting to hunt. Just something to think about, and best of luck either way you go.

It is much more worth it to separate it out. My dad I am did that, it was fun to go on two LE hunts. One he was hunting and I was guiding, the other I was guiding and he was tagging along...

Plus, then you are not worried about having to fill two tags on one LE unit. I think that could be stressful...
