I seen a forecast today calling for rain and a little snow on the Kaibab. How much of an effect would a good early snow fall have on the early riffle hunt? I've heard it could be tough huntin without some good weather.

Any weather will be a plus. Right now it has not stopped raining since last night down here. Rain is good but cold and snow would be better for a hunt. Just my thoughts.

Mick,

Pray for snow.Have you done any scouting? Was up there for the archery hunt this year, saw 4 nice big bucks, several forks.Man are you going to have fun!!!!Remember, plan on staying the whole hunt, you can only kill a big buck if you let the little ones go by.

A single storm might not do it. I have the early tag in 12AW and was up scouting a week ago or so. Talked to the manager for 12B. She was helping out 12A's manager. She said that they will tough out a storm if it warms back up again. Usually when it gets cold and stays cold they start moving.

Snow will help move more deer down, but there are still good bucks in the unit right now without snow. I would plan on not having snow and if you get it, it would be a bonus. Glass Glass Glass and move when you arent seeing deer. I hope you guys kill some monsters. Orlin, I will be going up for the early hunt (just found out last night) where are you camping at?............ Thanks, Allen Taylor......

LAST EDITED ON Oct-15-06 AT 06:40PM (MST)[p]I had the late tag last year. One of the best bucks I saw was at the very highest elevation of the unit. He was in the snow and didn't look like he was in any hurry to get off the Mountain.
It surprised me that he was there that late in the year. You will find deer at any elevation, but I would concentrate on the ponderosa pine, juniper transition zone. The Kaibab had a lot of water in the form of rain and snow the last few days. Get away from roads the best you can.
FYI:the best investment I ever made in hunting equipment was a pair of expensive binoulars. About two grand. Money well spent.
Good luck on your hunt!

I just got back from scouting 12AW last night and it rained like a mutha all night friday and kept it up of and on through sunday. Water standing everywhere. Saw a few nice deer and they were right on top and in the ravines. The burned areas are showing some growth here and there. Good luck.

When I purchased the map service from Duwane that was one of the things that he said. Do not rely on hunting water. They are going to have plenty without having to hit tanks. And talking to the game manager she said get a ridge away from a road and you'll be amazed at what you will see. Good luck everyone. Less than 2 weeks left. Allen, I am sending you a PM. Thanks

Last year we saw all kinds of deer on water on the kaibab, but it was not the average year any where last year.On the late hunt last year most of the deer had moved down out of the pines and in to the junipers and there was no snow it was just the hunting pressure and cold that had moved I think. We saw lots of deer from the top of the P-J to the sage flats in the bottom.Snow is always great as it is sure a lot easier to glass deer in the snow!
