I have a rifle tag for third season unit 55. I have elk hunted over there in archery season, but never for deer and never with a rifle. Unfortunately, I am a single dad living in Castle Rock, and wasn't able to get away to scout at all. I used 5 preference points, and would love to get a big buck. Any ideas guys?

I hunted unit 43 with a muzzle loader this year. We camped in 55 and went across the border each morning to hunt 43. Unit 43 absolutely sucked... but I would have killed for a tag in 55! We saw some great bucks over there. I'm not sure if they will have moved out of the country were they were hanging during the MZ hunt... but I'd be happy to tell you where we were seeing them. Just sent you a PM.

hello, I am also a single dad with 2 young boys living in castle rock who loves to hunt deer. I have been looking for someone to hunt with here in colo. If interested let me know.

Hey Whipknot,
Thanks for the information. sorry to hear that you didn't have much luck in unit 43, but would love to chat about what you saw in 55. When you say you sent me a PM, how does that work. I am kind of new to this site. Let me know how I can get in touch with you. Thanks agains
Don

Scouting wouldn't do you any good aother than familiarizing yourself with the roads and such. The deer should be in the middle of their transition from winter to summer range depending on snow depth. If you get good snowfall, the only worry you will have is your field judging ability and knowing how good the bucks you are looking at are.

bvbowhunter,

When you login and the next page that comes up is the Main Forum page and if you look at the top left corner you should have a "red flag" icon saying Inbox Mail. Then look over to the right and above the forums and for the word INBOX and click on that, it will bring up your message from the person who sent it to you.
You can then scroll down and reply to him/her the same way.

Anytime you want to send someone a PM (private message) or E-Mail, look right next to their name of that post and the "double envelope" icon is for E-mail and the one next to it has a single envelope and that is for PM. The icon of a human head is the name of the person IF THEY ARE ALLOWING IT.

Thanks Buckspy,
The area that I have been looking at is just west of Ohio City and a little north of there. Do you know anything about that section of Unit 55? It looks like we might be getting some snow, so I would like to familiarize myself with where those transition areas are. As always, appreciate your insight.
Don

Don,

My father and I drew 3rd season in 55 this fall as well. I have some digital pics of the area I took last month while scouting. No deer in the area at that time, it was just to get a lay of the land. I would be happy to share some of those pics w/ you.

Additionally, if you see a red Dodge 2500 diesel short-bed or a silver Dodge 2500 diesel long-bed while you are in the area, please feel free to stop in. That will be myself and my fathers trucks.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reply. I will keep an eye out for you and definitely say hello if I come across your location. What part of Unit 55 are you going to hunt. The only area I am really familiar with is along the Ohio City and Pitkin area.

I live in Gunnison and know that unit pretty well. For anyone venturing out for 2nd, 3rd seasons, be prepared to see a lot of blaze orange. It's a popular unit with OTC elk hunters. Early snow is moving both deer and elk to lower elevations. Recent snow has turned the back roads into a greasy mess. The big bucks will be the last to migrate, so stick to the higher elevations.

Thanks for the info. Like I said, the only area that I am really familiar with is west of Ohio city, Jackson lake, etc. My buddy said he saw some nice bucks around there 2 years ago. I wonder if there are any local parttime outfitters that would be willing to show me around without having to mortgage my house.

Todd,
Thanks for the PM. I'll try some of those access areas. I am excited about the hunt, but will only have the weekend to get a buck. How is the snowpack over there?
